A couple of months ago I replaced the electrical compenents (rotor button, dis cap, points and condenser) and it fixed my sputtin problem. Well the old 9N (front mounted distributer) is starting to act up again. I am thinking of replacing components with a electronic ignition that is offered on this site for a cool $98. Just wanted to ask the experts on this forum what else could be causing my electronics to be failing so quickly AGAIN.... Also, ask if anyone has had any negative experience with the front mounted electronic ignition... thanks

Rob..... ..dispite whooplaw advertizing and wishfull thinking, the ONLY frontmount electronic ignition that is SUCCESSFUL is installed on 12 volt negative ground converted 9N's..... .period, understand? Its a transistor technical design problem thing.

There's alotta different causes for splutterin' but new ignition points are a cheap place to start. BAD squarecan frontmount ignition coil is another common cause of splutterin'..... ...Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Maybe if Pertronix and Genesee had checked with you they wouldn't have made all of those products that don't work

It is a widely known problem that the e-ignition units like the one mentioned here are non-reliable at low voltage.. and the threshold for that 'low voltage' is just about at the point where an N's electrical system sets.. so.. If ya got a cherry unit.. your e-ignition works. If ya got a little waer and tear.. it doesn't work.

If your starter drags a bit and drawns more current.. and the voltage drops just a tad too much.. the e-ignition will not function. It isn't like points where you get weak spark.. but can still keep on plugging.. the e-ignition is triggered or it isn't... plain electric theory 202. A marginal starter, battery, wireing, resistor or battery can all contribute to this problem.

Probably a 'more reliable' option for an e-ignition are those kits you see that still use the points.. but in a low poer scheme just for trigger and switching... not a true breakerless setup.. but slightly less sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

A search of the last 1 weeks posts turned up (3) reported problems with e-ignition on a 6v N. And (2) of the posts said they called customer support and were told to put the points back in due to low voltage.

E-ignition sure seems like alotta work.. I've heard some have to use a special coil... Looks like a set o' points is MUCH easier and cheaper. Besides... a piece of brown paper bag might get you home when you're on the side of the road with dirty points... won't do it with a burned out e-ignition...
