I posted a few days ago about the follies I was having with my riding lawnmower (Craftsman 42inch cut/piece of junk) I got disgusted with it and bought a Snapper rear engine rider. GREAT MOWER!! And my yard looks like a golf course. Thanks to all of you who gave me some advise.

I just took off the deck of the Crapsman and I have decided to just use it to pull around my utility wagon, which is still very handy. But now I have a wild hair! I was looking at the motor and thinking that a set of dual carbs would spruce up the 19.5hp twin cylinder briggs a bit, but I can't find any anywhere on the net. Do any of you guys know where I could find some? I looked around on some of the lawnmower racing web sites, and struck out. I also posted on the garden tractors forum, but no luck there either. Thanks again for all your help! Maybe someday if my 8N EVER breaks down (like that'll happen) I'll have a tractor question!----Rob

Your ground speed is made available via a Vee belt you know. So, souping up the engine might be neat, but the drive belt has to deliver all that woopie.

I'm using my retired rider for utility work too and have already worn out 1 belt.

Just an FYI

You can always use your old Craftsman riding mower as a "Gopher Killer". I saw a guy in Farm Show Magazine, take an old riding mower, remove the deck, hook up a hose to the exhaust of the engine, stick the other end in a gopher hole, and let the engine run for about 15 minutes. Kills the gophers underground by carbon monoxide! Says it works great. Probably pretty rough on the old engine though. Really cool though if you have a darn gopher problem. They are smart little boogers.

Congratulations on your new mower. Folks have a Snapper that I get to drive sometimes. Good machine,, but wait till you have to buy a replacement belt for it. :-) About your racing Crapsman. On my John Deere Kohler engine, I was able to up my HP simply by changing the carb . The only difference on those engines was the larger carb on the 14 horse.

How about finding an old engine and getting the manifold off it and maybe having a machine shop do some rework to make it fit? Bet there is a racing team near you that could help. A dual carb manifold should be doable I would think. You also might consider porting the head, exhaust and intake, and maybe high compression pistons. Different drive pulleys would also make it much much faster.

One last idea, do a search on the Internet for racing lawn mowers. I know that there are groups that do that,, and I bet they would be the ones to steer you in the right direction.

Have fun!!
