I recently purchased a 1950 8N. I have been doing some light work around our small farm, but the spring rains finaly stopped and I started to brush hog our 11 acres of pasture. I am getting a springing, squeeking sound from the right rear break housing . I thought the brake might be dragging so I jacked the whole back end up and tightend the break adjustment till I could not turn by hand then backed off but I could not get rid of the squeek completely. Could this be antoher problem besides the brake dragging?

If you can see as much as 3/8" of threads of the end of the axle it is probably the hub rubbing the brake spring/s.

Sometimes you can be lucky and only have to replace the hub to fix it and sometimes the axle spline is worn too much too to fix it.

I have had some success by shimming the spline between the axle and hub. I found some steel material at the local industrial supply that is hard enough that it does not distort or crush when the hub is tightened thus it is able to keep the hub from moving inwards too far. I cut six shims that are the same lenght of the spline of the hub and then with the axle nut off the axle I insert one shim in each spline and drive them in until the ends are even with the hub flange and then with a sledge hammer I drive the hub on far enough to start the axle nut and tighten it tight as it needs to be. I always go back in a couple of hours and re-tighten the axle nut until it won't move and then after about 50 hours go back and tighten it again. If it won't move after about 50 hours you are in good shape from now on.

Ford owners manuals instructed the owner to do the re-tightening of the axle nut on all new 8N and NAA Ford tractors. If they had all been properly maintained there would be not worn out hub splines or axle splines.

Rob..... ...yep, its yer hub. Grab the top of yer reartire and try to rock-itt side-to-side and watch yer BIG AXLENUTT. Gotta alotta slop? Worn hub splines that fit on the rear axle.

Altho there is always the possibility that one of your brakeshoe retracting springs is rubbin' caussin yer squeekin'. Thats onnna those things ya gotta eyeball.

Note: your 1-7/8" axlenutt is torqued to 450 ft/lbs. (thazza BIG GRUNT onnna 4ft breakerbar) It never hurts to really honk down on yer axlenutt. But generally, once the hubsplines gitt worn and loose, iff'n ya wants to stopp the moanin & groann' & squeekin' its hub replacement time $50 cheap.

Check yer I&T FO-4 manual for replacement proceedures..... ....Dell

One more question, I have about 5 acres left to cut can I finish before I replace the hub?

Rob..... ..yes, finish yer mowin', work on yer hub when ya gitta'round tuitt. NOTHING is going to fall off or break. You asks what was squeekin?, ya gottza answer. Theres alotta 8N's with sloppy hubs that are worn and squeek, and I've never heard of one falling off yet.

At least get you very own personal copy of the I&T FO-4 manual before you do anything. Readily available from sponsors of this great N-Board, most agricultural emporiums. Amazon.com, WalMart books, www.n-news.com also has great archive of implement manuals. My local (byte my tongue) John Deere dealer parts counter has it for sale. Why even your Ford/New Holland dealer sells it, isn't that amazing? $27 cheap. Gittcha one..... ...Dell
