Do piston rings rotate on the piston, or will they stay where you put them? What I mean by that is if you stagger the rings (like you are supposed to) during assembly is it possible for them to rotate and line back up causing oil blow-by? Thanks!----Rob

Rob..... ..never heard of new rings rotating in the cylinderbore. (its a friction thing) And yes, you are supposed to "stagger" the ring gapps 180* around the piston. You did check yer bare ring-gap BEFORE INSTALLATION, didn't you. Undersized rings will have a TOO LARGE END-GAP even after installation ..... ..Dell

I believe that rings can rotate, nothing to keep them from not. Had a mower that gradually started using oil and got to the point of oil fowling out the plug, got to the point Dad took to garage to get fixed said was beyond repair, brought home in box, first time I had ever seen inside of motor, decided to try to see if I could get it together, thought that rings should non line up like they were on piston, turned them 1/3 apart, 3 ring piston, got it together, decided to try to start it, ended up using it for several years befor selling it and no oil burning and reused the old rings and no cylinder honing and shop had told Dad the cylinder bore was shot

Thanks Dell

That's what i figgered. I didn't assemble the engine. This is a 3rd hand riding lawnmower that I have had for a few years. Oil consumption was always a problem. She finally siezed last night. I opened it up to see exactly what happened. The rings werent staggered, and the oil slinger was missing. I am trying to find a cost effective replacement (I don't believe in putting a lot of hard earned money in a mower). Thanks again for the info!!---Rob

Just for what it is worth. Back in late 60s I used to build and race VWs. When I pulled one apart to rebuild it and put it back together, it would always Whistle on the higher revs. Not your problem by any means, but, how we cured it was, Install the rings in the piston, slid the piston into the jug with STP as lubricant. Then we would slowing turn the jug around the piston on an engine lathe slowly back and forth. What that did was to "seat" the rings and jug together. When we started doing this, we eliminated not only the whistle, but seated the rings and eliminated the break in time for that engine.

I could go on and on about rod roller bearings, crank bearings, etc etc. But, since this is off topic, I will just quit there.
