This farm-stead and house are at least 105-yrs old from what I get from the deed and tax records. I spent all weekend leveling the old grainery. It's all cedar construction with 1"x"6 inside liner; horizontal paneling so to speak. Cedar clapboard siding. If you're old farm enough you've probably seen the like.
I removed the divider to open it up and there was a 1929 Ks license plate for a patch so maybe that hints at the age. Needed a patch 74-years ago. Plate was in pretty good shape, too. Anyway, the ol' thing doesn't lean anymore and is sitting level all around. Feels good just to walk across the floor. I know a guy that has some nice cedar clapboard for half-price so I'll get the outside reworked too. I'll put lites in the loft doors and upgrade the front door. Probably frame a window into the back door hole. It's going to make a real nice wood shop when all's said and done. Don't need a grainery because I sold off 10-20acre lots and there's no farming here now. Should be good for another 50-yrs with any attention at all. I guess I'll have to paint it.
The nearby oak and walnut trees my dad planted 30-40yrs ago will be great trees in 50-years. That's as close to farming dad ever did. 75-yrs and one walnut might be pushing on the side of the grainery but none of that will be up to me.
I did my part to pass it along.

I'm on a quick lunch break eat'n my LIVERWURST sandwich.

A GOOD woodshop will have a wooden floor., tough and groove. Oak flooring, 6 in. wide boards, planed on only one side. An ocassional accidential spilling of linseed oil and those partial empty cans of turpentine for good-ole fragrance. Sorta like "CANOE' after shavie.

Hope this helps..... John,PA

I agree. This ol' shed/grainery has 1x6 T&G floor. It's 7/8" actual thickness and I'm thinking it's cedar like the rest. I'll know when I sand the cupping out of it. Standing inside, everything you see below the roof is 1x6 T&G, except for the loft doors and man doors; they aren't T&G. The roof is cedar shake but it has composition shingles over that.
It squared up so well the lean-to on the side looks pretty good now. I have enough good clapboard on that side under the lean-to to repair the other 3 walls of the shed. The lean-to is osage orange posts and cedar siding. The posts will last forever but the siding needs work.
Guess I'll have to square that away before it's done. The 8N will look right at home in there.
