I have been having problems with the 3 point hydraulics on my 1950 8n. They leak down very quickly. Like the minute I put my foot on the clutch, my brushhog is on the ground five seconds later. So far I have been "dealing with it" but I would like to get it fixed. About 2 months ago I changed the hydro/tranny/rear end fluid hoping this would help, but did not. The situation is getting progressivly worse. It is getting slower and slower to pick up my old brushhog, and sometimes won't lift it up all the way. Is this bad piston rings in the ram cylinder? Does anyone have a diagram of the lift cylinder and pump? Do I have to pull the PTO shaft to pull the ram cylinder off, and what are those things that go from the ram to the pump that I see in the I&T FO-4 manual. I assume one is the hydraulic fluid supply tube for the ram cylinder, but how do you get it off of the pump? The fo-4 is a good manual, but hydraulics are mostly greek to me. If you should try to fix the lift you can get good information on how to do it.

First though you need to determine what is the problem so you will know where to start.

I suspect that your main problem is probably a bad pressure relief valve and or a leaky ram cylinder. The ram cylinder comes off with the top hydraulic assembly cover. You do have to remove the right hand inspection plate to be able to guide the control rod back into the rocker eye of the control valve rocker that is part of the pump in the belly.

Ditto what everyone else said and maybe you wanna get a Master Parts Catalog. Very good exploded diagrams. Im no mechanic, but w/this board, the FO4 and the MPC, I was able to rebuild my lift w/no problem.

What Joe says. And look farther down this page for Zane/s response to a hydraulic question. He has a concise trouble shooting guide. The tube from the pump to the lift cylinder is in the casting and should be ok as long as you have a good gasket seal when you put the lift cover back on. Have faith. I redid mine with little knowledge going in but the FO-4 manual and a few questions answered from the archives and this board. Start with the small stuff 1st. Probably the cylinder rings. You may not need to worry about the pump. Good luck. Steve 8N 169302

Before you worry about how it fits together and how to take it apart, start by pulling the inspection cover (where the dipstick is) off of the right side. Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and raise the lift all the way up with your bush hog on it. Now have a look in through the inspection port with a flashlight. If you see a steady stream of oil running down from the lift cylinder, then it is likely the source of your problem. If you se the oil swirling heavily near the rear of the pump, then the relief valve is not setting up the way it's supposed to. You have classic symptoms of one or the other - or maybe both. Check this out, study your FO-4, and get back to us with your specific questions. Don't be afraid of it. You'll be surprised how simple the system is. Good luck!
