My local bone yard has an 8n that they just received and has a Sherman tranny. My question is, "How can I tell the difference between a step down and a combination? It's not a step up, I have one of those on my 9N. Wanting to put this on a 47 2N. TIA Rob J

Rob -

Be aware that there are different PTO speeds and road speeds at each setting.

For instance, at Sherman high and shifter 1st the ground speed will be about the same as Sherman neutral and shifter 2nd. But the PTO speed at the first setting will be 540 RPM and at the second about 360 (I think) at 1000 engine rpm. I have a copy of the table. To take most advantage of the Sherman you need to study the table and work at the appropriate settings.

Rob..... ...iff'n ya gotts a step-up in yer 1st N-tractor, then ya knows what the shift lever looks like for the step down Sherman. sameo-sameo. The shiftlever for the 3-speed combo is a more complicated "dogleg" looking shifter lever. Be certain you gitt all the parts and make a paper/cardboard pattern of where and how the shifter lever comes out the tranny case so you know where to drill the shifter lever access hole in yer new tractor..... ....Dell

I have combination, you have three positions - 1- push forward. 2- pull back. 3-center position then pull away from tractor ( the shaft pulls out an inch or so)and then pull back for your third position.

I guess my question is are there any cosmetic differences between the step down and the combination. I would imagine there would be a difference in price. I would like the combination over the step down. I want to make sure that I know what it is before I purchase it. Rob

Rob, TOP AND front of combo and extreme step-down unbolt and come off. FRONT ONLY of step-up/overdrive and step-down/underdrive come off. Combo handle works off side of top part that comes off. Steps'(and reversers) handles work off side of FRONT part that comes off.
HTH,
jim
