Always been a little loose, leaks just some, and every couple years I take the clamp off to see if it's on there right, always is.
Today I took it off thinking I might shim it and, as usual, it was right but I figured I try something different. I put the clamp on there and snugged it up just hard finger-tight, maybe little more can't remember but it wasn't hard tight, and then rapped on the bottom side of the clamp, both halves, all the way around. It drove the clamp maybe 1/16" up the manifold. Tightened the nut 1/2-turn and rapped on the bottom of the clamp again, all the way around.
Torqued it down and that clamp is holding the pipe hard against the manifold. It's not going to leak now.

Not to overlook the obvious, but there was a top & bottom to the original clamps. Not much of a difference, but enough to cause problems. However, that may not be the case with repos and the so called OEM clamp that you purchase now.

Yeah, there's a top to the clamp. And it snugs up on the manifold before it snugs up on the pipe. It may be that aftermarket pipes are smaller than original but it's a question question that comes up fairly regular on the board. The pipe is loose in the clamp.
The usual advise is to fabricate and add a spacer. Seems that's not required if the clamp is installed properly.

Another thing we do here at our shop for N's is to install a MM part that we stock here(sorry guys but it really does work). It fits snuggly inside the manifold and the pipe and then clamp it. This prevents movement when your clamp bolts stretch after use and reduces wear of the exhaust pipe at the point of contact with manifold. Email us for more info, Dale

Thanks for the tip Rob. Seems like maybe a older (tempered) exhaust pipe might still be better able to conform to irregular shape of the manifold.
