His chain would slide in the clevis and not prevent the side-to-side.
That's quite a set-up there.

Lot of guys don't like the idea of doing without a toplink. The pic shows a chain for a toplink, he can still lift his hog clear off the ground. The mower manuals I've seen show a flexable toplink and that is a good idea so the mower can follow the terrain regardless of what the tractor is doing.
I stopped using a rigid toplink and I did a lot less scalping and the mower didn't raise up when the front wheels of the tractor drop. I like that.
I see the highway guys don't use 3pt on their mowers at all. They tow them. That's what I do now. I never raised my mower off the ground anyway. I just use the hydraulics to raise the height in tough going otherwise I trailer the mower. Works good for me.
Oh yeah, the manuals I checked...not one said anything about the toplink required for safety sake. I never bought that anyway, that little thing isn't going to prevent a roll-over.
I do know it's a lot easier to get to the pto to hook up without that 3pt rigging in the way.
