Cracked block, any experience?

I'm hoping to hear from some guys that have some experience here.
This block is hairlined cracked from the intake valve to the cylinder; two cylinders like that. There's no intake valve seat inserts and I haven't pull the sleeve yet.
I understand that the way to go is to pin the crack, install a valve seat insert, and replace the cylinder sleeve. Also, pinning long cracks gets too expensive to make it worth while. Do I have that right?
Second thing, these hairline cracks, across the seat face, are not burnt and are not seperated so they are tight enough to be peened closed to where a good seat face can be worked into the block. No telling how long those cracks have been there. Assuming they don't spread, do these cracks really need to be pinned or can I just replace the sleeve, grind a new seat (no insert) and go with it. I might be willing to take a chance the cracks never spread. The kicker is this, guy at the machine shop says that crack might be into the water jacket but has been sealed and plugged by rust and scale deposits. If the block is cleaned you might well remove the plug and it's a new deal. Seems pinning up the cylinder wall, across the deck and seat face, and down into the port would be a problem if there is water behind it. Like I say, maybe I don't even want to clean the block but just peen the cracks, reface the seat, and put in the new sleeve. I know that's been done, anyone willing to witness their experience?
Good way or another way to go?

I'm not sure what engine you're dealing with, but unless it's a rare one, I would try to find another (good) block.

A good machinest can no doubt repair it, but won't the cost come close to finding a replacement?

As long as you are replacing the sleeves, anyway, you would not be facing extra expenses to re-sleeve the replacement block.

If you put it together without proper repairs and replacing the valve seats, you will probably have problems with it down the road, and the $$$ into this overhaul will be wasted.
