After adjusting the clutch freeplay (it wouldn't free the flywheel and I was grinding gears)I got it to free the flywheel correctly. I started it and the tractor was off and running in gear although it was in neutral. I shut if off while running and the transmission (and the starter) locked up and got "stuck between 2 gears". After taking apart the shifter I still could not free up the locked gears.
The repair dude hoisted the back end up and finally got it unstuck but now in all gears there are some clunking noises. More severe noises in 3rd and 4th. What did I break? Is it worth it to dissemble it and try to fix it? What about getting a new rear end from a salvage yard? Engine was overhauled 3 years ago. Are the bearings shot? What is this 8N worth as is? The overall condition is very good.

Barry,

Clunking as it relates to gears is not good. This must be repaired at once. My guess is that this is not from bearings unless they have completely disintegrated and again, that would be a "must fix now" kind of a thing.

So far as should you try and fix it the answer is yes. The transmission has to come out no matter what you do so while you have the tractor down why not peek into the case and see what is wrong. If you want to just replace the whole thing I would bet it's going to be pricey.

If you sell it as-is you will get the buyer who has more time and mechanical savvy than money and you will be selling it as a parts tractor.

What does the repair dude that got it unstuck think it is?

The repair dude has no idea would have to tear it down to find out, and he doesn"t really want to do it. Another guy wants to buy it for the engine. I have no idea what it is worth. Do you have a clue?

First thing is to figure out the problem if you have to drop the tranny and take it apart. If it's a 50-cent fix you don't need those other questions. Tear down the tranny and figure replacing the worn and damaged parts.
$500 fix and you should look for a used tranny instead. If you don't want to tear down the tranny then shop around for a good used tranny.
CW says selling as is you lose more than a used tranny costs.
Why you ask about the rear end?
