My step father has a 1950 8-n that he had rebuilt about 3 years ago. New pistons, sleeves, etc. About a week ago it all of a sudden developed a bad knock and he shut it down quick. When they took the pan off they found 3 lock tabs laying in the pan and one of the rod nuts had backed off about a quarter of an inch. He said his mechanic has found no damage to the bearing or shaft other than the loose bolt. I told him to go back with Red loctite and new lock tabs. Here is my question. They also found 2 circular spring clips in perfect condition in the pan. From his discription they sound like piston pin clips. ( Tractor is 90 miles from me) I think they might have fallen in the pan when it was overhauled 3 years ago??? If they came out of the piston wouldn't they have gotten torn up getting to the pan?? Did they come from something other than the piston that uses a clip like that?? With help from this board my 2-N (6 volt) sure starts and runs great. Barrett Jones

Iff"n ya just retighen the rod bolts you will never be able to run it and fell safe. remove them pistons and check. i have seen what a piston pin can do and you may be look"N fer a block iff"n ya keep on running it and a pin lock has come out. Its hard to say a lock would not have damage if it came out. One thing is for sure, you would find it in the pan.

Nope .. They came from the wrist pins. The sleeves probably have a big groove in them. But then it should use oil.??? If they are in Perfect condition I wonder. Could someone have left them off... If it were mine I would be checking more.
