am still using the same sol. I have not changed that. Matter of fact I haven"t taken it off yet. When I put the new battery on it started one time and I used it. The next time I tried to use the tractor it would not start. The battery is hooked up just like you would on a car. postive on hot and neg grounded ( I think that is the way you explain it). Anyway I called a fellow down the street who workes on tractors and he told me how to jump start it by putting the hot on the terminal off the sol attaching to the starter and the neg attacted to the frame and thay worked on getting it started. of course I was using my truck to start it. But it"s a pain to do this all the time especially when I have another pasture located somewhere else to bushog and my cables are not long enough to reach from the truck to the tractor on the trailer :) I know the battery is hot cause at times it does make a slight sound but most of the time it just doesn"t do anything. I"m not a great mechanic, mostly not great but I hate to have a peice of machinery to beat me and I am willing to learn. The only thing I changed was the battery when it died. Unless on tractors it"s done backwards.

So it will start when the battery is good and fully charged to you jump from a charged battery. And it runs ok and you get some work done but next time it won't start. That's because the battery ran down and is no longer fully charged. The problem seems to be a charging problem.
When the engine runs the generator is suppose to charge the battery. If that doesn't happen the engine starts and runs on the battery. After about 5 or 8 hours of that the battery won't start it anymore.
You got an ammeter there on the dash that shows discharge (-) and charge (+). It should show a discharge when you crank the engine to start it up. For a few minutes after it starts the ammeter should show a charge until the genny gets the battery back to full charge. If the ammeter doesn't show a discharge while you're cranking the engine get a new one and put it on there.
Get that battery charged up good. You can get a 20-25 dollar charger at WalMart or anywhere. You can always put the charger on there when you're done mowing so it's ready to go next time. Takes about 4 hours to charge, depending.
Anyway, get it charge up and go over on the right side next back by the battery and lean over and see the voltage regulator. It's a box about 3"x4" and has a row of screws under it. Probably 4 screws and you take a screwdriver and short from the nearest screw to the next screw and it's suppose to spark and startle you. If it's a whimpy spark that does not startle you then it ain't right and you can get back with that new info. If it's good then you turn the key on, start the engine, and see that the ammeter jumps up and shows a charge. After a few minutes of charging up there at 8 or 9 amps it should fall back to 2 or 3. Exact numbers are not so important as the pattern. If it doesn't do that then get back on the board and we can talk generators.

Rob..... ...excellent advice for 6 volt genny tractor problems.

UNFORTUNATELY, in a previous post, Cheryl has told us that her tractor has a 12 volt alternator conversion with a new 12 volt battery..... ...respectfully, Dell

Take a pair of channel lock pliers Or two beater screwdrivers. With the tractor in neutral (important safety issue) & key on try jumping the large battery terminals on the solenoid and see if that works. You"ll see sparks so make sure there isn"t fuel leaking about. I can remember one old car that just ate solenoids enough that I always carried a channel locks in it.

Using a single jumper cable jump from the + battery to the starter just as you were with your truck battery. This tells you if your battery is good and if the - connections to the battery are good. If that is ok then jump from one side the solonoid to the other. this will tell you if your + battery connection is good. If that is ok then remove the wire going to the starter thum button and ground it good. If this is ok then starter button needs to be looked at. If it is not ok then the solonoid is faulty. By ok I mean engine cranks/starts. Now the solonoid has x number of clicks built into it when new and when the clicks are used up it just quits. Important thing with solonoid is that you replace it with one exactly like the one that is in it and wire it the exact same way or even a new one will act if there were no clicks built into it. To say the least, it is safe to say that all solonoids are not created equal. My bet is on a faulty solonoid but check all the other things first. Tractor out of gear during all checkin.

Take a hammer, and whack the solenoid. (Seriously, it"s possible you fused the contacts together, and tapping it might help)

I love it.

Is it a 6 or 12V battery? If it's 6V, it's probably (though not certainly) a positive ground system, not negative.
