I got off work early today and decided to get in some seat time. I was brushhogging the lower field when I stalled the engine in some heavy wet and tall grass. When I went to restart, she turned over twice and then just clicked. I tried jumpering from the battery around the solenoid and nothing happened. When my wife got home I got her to pull start me. Fourth gear and about 5 feet was all she needeed to fire right up. Here"s the bad news: I unfortunatly pulled the starter apart when I removed it. The commutator looks worn, but the brushes look great. I guess somewhere along the road somebody put a new set in. So fellas, what are the merrits of a rebuild versus buying a rebuilt starter, and who should I seek out for a rebuild? Does anyone offer used starters? Thanks a lot for any input anyone might have!!!----- Rob

Rob, what Dell sez.....no guts, no glory; it's already in pieces, so you might as well clean it up & put it back together. If it doesn't work, you're out a piece of emory paper & a couple of hours time. I get all my N starters/generators rebuilt at a small shop in Ashland VA; how far is that from you?

Bruce,

I am in Scottsville Virginia; about 20 minutes south of Charlottesville. Ashland is about an hour drive for me, give or take. I had the genny rebuilt at a place halfway between here and Richmond, but I can"t find what I did with the number or directions, or the name of the place!!! Could you please give me some info on the place you are talking about? I was gonna dive in head first and try to give her a whirl (pun intended), but it was almost 95 degrees here today, and my wife told me that I was better off helping her clean the house. Maybe tomorrow I"ll have better luck with my scheduling!---Rob

Rob, I use Ace Rebuilders, Ashland VA, 804.798.3838. On the east side of Rt 1, just north of Ashcake Rd. But, that's a long drive from Scottsville; I'll check w/ a buddy in Appomattox tomorrow & see if I can find you a place closer to home! Email me & I'll get back with you. I'm bhaynesATworldnet.att.net(Use @ instead of AT in the address)

Mine did the same thing right after bought tractor, pulled it out and of course fell apart, but worked on many years ago and remembered how to put back together. When pulled apart bugs, mud
weeds etc all came out of it.

All I did what Dell says cleaned everything up
real good and then put back together, but when I got it all back together I took some duck tape and sealed up the open end so nothing could get in and then took long thin strips and put all the way around it so it would not come apart when putting back in and taking out again.

Also I took apart the bendix gear and cleaned it real good, then before putting the whole thing
back in I checked it in vice to make sure it was
working. (Be sure to use short wires from battery to the started, learned the hard way that can lose a lot of juice in long jumper cables =) )

Hope this helps, btw I check price on new one (aka) rebuilt one at NAPA and it was 105.00.

Rob..... ...purtter back together after you polish the commutator with emory paper to bright copper. Should work for you UNLESS you need to undercut the mica insulation between the copper commutator bars with a broken hacksaw blade. So what iff'n the commutator bars arn't level and have gooves in them? The brushes will wear to match, big deal..... ...Dell

Yes, new and used starters are available; for a price, and usually a fairly high price. I think your best bet would be to take your old starter to a rebuild shop and have it rebuilt. I guarantee it's a lot cheaper and just as good. James

Rob,
When I bought my 2N the starter turned awfully slow althought it was able to startthe engine. A few weeks later it was not able to turn enough to start the engine. I went to the New Holland dealer here in NY state and got me a brand new starter for $90. I am glad I got a new one so I didn"t have to search for someone for a rebuilding. I still have the old one and if/and when I find a place to rebuild it I will just to have it as a backup.
