I took my dead starter down the road (bout an hour away) To the starter rebuilder guy. One hour and 55 bucks later I had a virtually new starter, even sandblasted and painted! He even took me back and showed me what had failed and where it shorted out. I am very pleased with this guy, and if anyone want"s his info, feel free to e-mail me. I got home and put her on and she spun the motor faster than ever!

Thanks to everyone who helped!

I use to rebuild starters in my younger years so I tackled my 8N without reservations. I bought a new style drive and brushes for about $40. I couldn't get the soldered brushes out so I took it to a major rebuild shop in the big city. They charged me $15 to install the new brushes. So much cheaper than a rebuilt starter.

I had a similar experience with my NAA starter about a month ago... cost me 80 bucks.. but they had to drop in new field coils and a brush plate..

Painted.. and in fact.. painted too much! They had to sand the face down a bit so i could get it to ground onthe tractor.

It's amazing that this old stuff can be rebuilt so reliabaly.. and usually less than a 'new'unit..and probably better than 'overseas' units.
