Good day and help.I am restoring a 49 8n 212854 and have stripped it down, bought all the seals bearing brake shoes, you name it.I got the tractor from my mother inlaw after her husband passed away.It did have a brake that was not working because of an axle seal leak, the right one if i remember correctly.now that im putting it back together i'm having problems setting the shim on the axles.I put the axles back in with the shims that were in it and find that the axle on the left (driver side)before i put the hub in has about 1/2 inch play.after the hub is in about 1/8 inch play.the right (pass side) goes tight as i bolt the bearing housing in.It has been a while since i stripped it down but i marked all pcs hubs, axles. bearing housing so i could put them all back in the right place. Are there different lenth axles from one side to the other and my father inlaw changed them without knowing? HELP.Thanks in advance for the help.

The axles butt together in the middle with little (.oo2 or so in endplay). The shims set the e/p. You will notice 2 bolts on the brg retainer enter from the inside and 4 from the outside. YOu use just the 2 inside bolts to trial and error the e/p. Install one axle and play with the other shim pack. Dealers get $5 for a shim! You can make them yourself out of gasket material. It is hard to get down to the .002 e/p by feel, you sort of guess once you get close! The hubs have no effect on the e/p. You can install them later. The system is sort of clever although it is a poor design because with wheels that size, it is not in the cards for the hub to stay tight, all 8n' wear them out like popcorn when they work loose. Only 8n and Jubilee had the bad hub design. Henry knew better when he designed the 9n but the boys screwed up when they designed the 8n!
