Until recently my 9n started like every other 9n (1/2 throttle and choke for a few turns) now it only starts with no throttle and no choke and if I don't ease the throttle out reeeal slooow it quits. Having the air filter off doesn't make any difference. Why have I had to change my starting technique and why does pulling the throttle stall it?

One of my little ones (now grown up) could never keep his hands off of anything mechanical or that might come apart. If he visited your house anytime between two and fifteen years old the carburetor would need to be checked to see if the two adjustment screws are still in the carburetor. Additionally the high-speed screw (big one) would need to be checked to see if it is between 1 and 1 1/2 turns out.

Since the tractor cranks with no choke now it might indicate the fuel shutoff valve is not being closed and the needle and seat has started leaking slightly.

Sometimes big people cannot resist the temptation of fiddling with things they don’t understand.

Martha..... ...you write..... ."if I don't ease the throttle out reeeal slooow it quits"..... this is usually a sign of BAD centrifical ignition advance. But in your case of no-choke starting vs previous choke required starting, my instinct is saying something changed in yer carb. Like the strangler ...ie... commonly called the choke. I'd say it was time for a carb re-build..... ....Dell

Russ,

The governor spring is still in place. The symptoms came on over a period of a few weeks I'd guess.

There's an off chance that.... in reply to martha, 08-31-2004 20:15:17
the 4 screws holding the bottom bowl section of the carberator to the top body section are loose and causing your problem. Doesn't cost anything to tighten those screws just some. You don't want to overtighten those screws but they should be just snug plus a quarter or half turn or so.

That might be the economizer side of your carb acting up. Leaky bowl gasket or plugged jet or port. If that fails you get extra gas all the time except when it nears full throttle. I think you would see just a little smoke when it starts and runs at lower speed, not sure. Either way the carb would need rebuilt or replaced.

martha,
Cheapest thing is to check and reset the metering valves on your carburetor. Either (or both) the idle or main jet may have moved. It"s getting too much gas for some reason. Your governor spring didn"t fall off, did it? How long did this take to develop?
