Wrecked my tractor today.

I was going down to the valley today when I noticed some overhanging limbs that I had been ducking for a long time. I decided to stop and cut them off as I had my "loppers" with me. I turned horizontal to the hill and left the tractor in neutral and running without setting the emergency brake as I had done (stupidly) many times before. I cut 4 limbs and looked up to see my Ford 3000 starting to slowly turn and roll down the hill. I ran as fast as my old legs would go which wasn't fast enough. I could stay even with the tractor but no way did I dare step in front of those big back tires to get to the seat. The tractor went faster and faster for about 50 yards and finally went over the creek bank and crashed into a big maple tree hood first. It took a tow truck over an hour to get it back to where we could tow it to the house. It is questionable whether the tractor will run again. I can say one thing for sure--I will NEVER again get off the seat with the tractor running, in neutral, and no emergency brake set. I just thank the good lord that I couldn't run fast enough to try to get on the seat. Learn from my stupidity. Lugnut

Lugnut,

Sorry to hear about your tractor. But at least you're OK and that's the most important thing.

I never use the parking brakes on my 8N. They never hold it anyway. I use the engine as a parking brake. Shut the engine off and put it in gear. Never has moved. I do this whenever I leave the seat, regardless. Especially when hooking up or unhooking an implement. I'm sure a tractor that's not running can figure out some way to hurt ya, but I think the odds are in my favor when it's shut off.

Lugnut,
Sadly ironic that these things happen now and then. But my SINCERE THANKS. I"m into my rear axles right now and really didn"t consider it a priority to make sure the parking brake pawls were good. Anyone who guessed what I"m gonna do gets the "Sharp as a Marble Award."

Well, I don't have much trouble wrecking because my wife drives a lot since she gets car sick, but she reaches over and tries to cover my eyes whenever we pass tractors.

Don"t give up on it. This pic is from Stuck & Troubled.

The guy that posted it wrote "this happened around 1971, it rolled down the bank behind it, was still running as it landed on it"s wheels and drove 20" along a road until it flipped once again and caught fire! It was rebuilt and is running yet today. This was my cousin driving again, but he got his leg hurt this time and spent a day in the hospital."

If a guy can get this running again you can get yours going too.

It takes a lot more than that to stop a Ford. Did you read the post from Shawn in Idaho? I think I might know that tractor. It went out the barn door with a load of corn on the wagon it was pulling. Trouble was, it was the door overlooking the concrete barnyard ten feet below! Ended up upside down under the wagon and the corn. Pounded out the dents and used it for about 20 more years. It was then traded in on a newer tractor. I'm sure it is still purring away somewhere.

First.. glad you are ok.

Second.. hopefully it will just be sheetmetal/radiator/fan/waterpump/front steering member problems,.. which sounds like alot.. but could be assembled in a day or two if the parts were on hand.

It isn't worth it sometimes to try and catch a RUNAWAY machine. Sorry to hear of the bent-up tractor. It could have been a lot worse.

On a lighter note: Did the tow truck accept your AAA card? (GRIN)

Man that stinks. I'm sorry to hear about your tractor. I am however glad you didn't end up hurt or worse. It could have been a lot worse. The Ford flag will be at half mast. Eric
