My neighbor came over today with his Massey Ferguson 165 today. He has a fork attachment on his FEL. He was able to pull a stump out for me (the stump was courtsey of hurricane Isabel last year) that I thought was need a backhoe and a stick of dynamite to remove. He made it look easy. My little 8N was humbled. I still love my little 8N, and used it to brushhog the pasture today....all day actually, but a big tractor with a FEL sure would be nice at times. Heck, even if I had a big mammoth of a tractor, I'd never get rid of my 8N!!! Just thought I'd share---Rob

I have two bigger ones, both with loaders. One's 68 hp, the other's 105 and I still use the 2N a lot more. Yeah, there are lots of thing the N won't do, or that the big boys do better, but there's also a pile of things the N does better.

The funny part is, when one of the big ones breaks down, I just use the other one, but if the N is down for any reason, I feel lost and my top priority is fixing it!

I'll be envious when I see a brand new 8N that just rolled off the assembly line!

I've been using my 165 for everything since I started re-building the 8N(over a year). All I can think about is what I could be doing on the 8N, especially since I found that Monroe seat for it last month. Guess you could say I'm N-vious of you(sorry, couldn't let that one go by).

Rob,

My first tractor was a Ford 3000 because I knew that an 8N was not heavy enough for the jobs I had to do on my new farm. Then when my Uncle died I got to buy his 8N from the estate - first thing I ever drove with a motor in it. I have used it a lot for plowing, grading and hauling stuff in the big scoop I have. BUT, I never bush hog with my Uncle's 8N. That is something that is only done on the 3000. Of course, I should mention that I am known to cut down any tree that the front end can push over - that goes up to 3" in diameter! Just not a job for the 8N. I also have a Woods back hoe that will only go on the 3000. A few times I too would like an even bigger tractor. The saying, "The right tool for the job!" is still true. And trying to use an undersized "tool" often means you are going to have trouble! So, not to feel gulity about haveing the desire for a bigger tractor - A man should have at least TWO tractors - I'm a charter member! :-)

The thing with the tree is the ablity to lift straight up. Tree roots are ment to resist side loads from wind during storms, not straight up lifting, an unnatural load - even for a tornado! I lost two trees during a bad storm the 7th of May. One tree took out my light pole. While all the power lines were down I cut a bunch of other trees that could take out the lines. One was a big pine. I have cut it into two equal length pieces that I am going to try to make a "stump lift" with. Sort of on the same line as has been posted on the board before, where an rear tire rim is used to run the chain over and down to the stump to change the horizontal pull from a tractor to a vertical (at least initally) pull on the stump. If I ever get the job done I'll post some pictures.

Regards,
Larry
