Running rough

I had a little problem with the points last night. Seems that they slipped closed and grounded out the system and I wasn't getting any spark. Curious problem, until I figured it out..thanks to this board!!

While I was troubleshooting I pulled the drain on the bottom of the carb and nothing came out, but when I pulled the fuel line going into the carb I got great flow. The tractor is running a little rough, and I am wondering if this could be the cause. I had the carb professionally rebuilt 2 years ago, and I wonder what's up. It should drain out the bottom, right? If nothing else, the cap and wires look like Henry Ford himself may have used them they are so old, so that may have something to do with it running rough. I was mainly just wondering about what ya'll thought about the carb. Thanks again so much for the help!!!----Rob

Rob, even good quality gas will gum up a carb if it's been setting in a 5 gallon can in the garage for 3 months before you put it in the tractor! Or, if you do not run a full tank of gas through the N once a month, you will get varnish build-up on the needle valve/seat. I use Sta-bil; I buy it by the quart, and keep it in the shed with my gas cans. Whenever I fill the 3 gas cans, I add the Sta-Bil when I put the cans in the shed; that way, I know that all the gas tanks around the place have treated gas. Also, some of the new needle valves have plastic tips; I've not heard good things about them. As to new wires.....money well spent.

Rob..... ...you say you have NO gas draining from your carb bottom plug and you have good gas flow from your disconnected fuel line. Did it occure to you to check the carb elbow fuel filter for clogging? ..... ..respectfully, Dell

I'm all over that, thanks Dell. I guess I was really wondering how it could be running at all with no gas comming out the bottom, but a good flow at the carb. Obviously some gas is getting through, just seemed wierd to me. Thanks for the feedback-----Rob

Two years to a sticky float valve! in reply to Rob N Va, 09-13-2004 14:57:32
Smack that carb with a screwdriver handle. Either upgrade your gas station or use that MMO 4oz/10gals gas every once in awhile as needed. Spending another 2-cents per gal for cleaner gas might be cheaper in the long run then adding MMO to clean up, never did the math. MMO is $7/qt.

Rob,
MMO quart for $7? Thats an awful lot. Where are you buying it from? I get mine at AUTOZONE when on sale for $4. Sometimes even $3. Of course in such cases I buy 4 bottles at a time. If you have an autozone near you check it out sometimes.

MMO Cost in reply to Bigwheel, 09-13-2004 18:30:45
Hi Guys,

I just bought a gallon jug of MMO while I was on vacation in the States. At Menards I payed just under $8 for the gallon bottle.

You might want to run to your closest Menards and check.

I was looking at the price at TSC the other day, thought it was high. I got a bottle don't know how much it cost. I've used maybe 4oz in 5yrs.
Now I know what's in it I'm don't plan on buying anymore. It's mostly Stoddard solvent anyway. I can get that for less than $3/gal.

I just looked at TSC's Blue Book and they list it at $4.15/qt. Don't know where I got the $7. Maybe the locals are trying to get over. I'll check em out next time I'm in there.

If nothing ran out.. then the bowl was dry, or near empty.. you need to check that float needle.

Also.. new copper core wires will give you better spark.. the old ones may 'leak', due to bad insulation.

Float needle valve probably stuck due to crappy gasoline.
