Are the studs for the manifold on an 8n made of brass like the nuts? Why are the nuts made of brass? Should I replace the studs when I replace the nuts, or only replace the studs if they look worn? Thanks!!---Rob

Rob..... ....yes, only the manifold nuts are BRASS. That is because the heat of the manifold is KNOWN to FREEZE regular steelnuts onto the steelstuds which will cause you to UNSCREW the stud from the WET block and pee all over you. Instead, Ford and most other automobile exhaust manifolds are held on with brassnuts so you DESTROY the SOFTER brassnut and leave the studs alone. Then you clean the stud theads with a threading-die. Simple, eh?

BTW..... the 1-5/8" long 7/16-14 block stud is torqued to 55 ft/lbs and the SPECIAL 7/16-20 x 5/8" hex BRASS studnuts are torqued to 27 ft/lbs. I always use "anti-sieze" on the HOT studnuts so they smoke like crazy when they first fire-up..... ...Dell

Remember, those studs go into the water jacket. If you do replace them, drain some of the water out of the block first. Some folks put sealer on the studs; some don't. I always put Never-Sieze on the brass nuts, however. NAPA has both nuts & studs; sorry, I don't have the part numbers.

The studs are not brass. They put brass on there so that after the nuts bake onto the studs you ruin the soft nut taking it off. Better then breaking the stud. Steel nuts would completely seize onto the steel studs with that heat and you would break the stud trying to remove the nut. If the studs are burnt, replace them. You don't want a broken stud down the road.
The exhaust pipe clamp has the same kinda problem with the bolt and nut burning and then the bolt breaks when you remove the clamp.
