8n tune up question

I am doing a minor tune up (for the first time) on my 8n. It has a front mount distributor. I bought a tune up kit with the cap, rotor, points, condenser and plugs. When I took the cap off to change all this stuff...I couldn"t find the condenser. I am not familiar with tractors. I have worked on older cars for years and it basically looked like the same set up. Rotor in the middle, points and a spot that looked like it should have a condenser. Am I missing something or is it mounted somewhere else? Can a tractor run without a condenser?

Thanks for any input!

Barry

BB,

Here's what to do:

1.) Unclip the coil. You don't have to disconnect the wire. Just swing it out of the way.

2.) Unclip the distributor cap and swing it out of the way, Again, you don't have to disconnect the plug wires.

3.) Two bolts hold the distributor to the block. Remove them, TAKING CARE TO NOTE TH POSITION OF THE ROTOR! Some will tell you that the tang on the shaft will prevent it from being installed 180 degrees off-kilter, but this is not true in my experience. Just make sure!

4.) On your bench top, do the tune-up. It's a lot easier than you'd imagine.

5.) Reinstall, reversing the procedure.

Good Luck!

Ron

The condensor sits on top of the distributor under the square coil. Unlatch the square black coil from the round distributor and pull it off, you will see the condensor then.

Good luck,
Dan

Whew! Thanks Dan! It kind of threw me for a loop. If you don't mind another question...the points look kind of hard to get to. Is there any trick about them?

You pull the two bolts holding the distributor in place and work on it on the workbench or in the kitchen. It goes back in only one way by the drive tang.

Remove the distributor completely from your tractor. That is, remove the top wire from the coil, then remove the two cap bolts on either side of the distributor. You can then pull it off the tractor and work on the points on a table - MUCH EASIER! Make sure when you put the distibutor back on, you line up the tabs on the back with the cam on the engine block. I found the easiest way to do this is leave the distributor cap off, but the rotor on, thread the two cap bolts a few turns in - just to line up the distributor. Put a little pressure on the distributor pushing it towards the block and turn the rotor with your other hand. When it lines up it will just "drop" onto place easily. Keep it pressed against the block and finger tighten the cap bolts to snug, to hold it in place. Then tighten with a socket or wrench. Don't forget to put the gasket on between the distributor and block, I always seem to do this and have to pull the distributor back off... :)

Good luck,
Dan
