leaking head bolt

I had a head bolt leaking coolant. I removed the bolt and put Ace brand Pipe Thread compound, tfe paste on the bolt and torqued it to 65 lbs. It still leaks. I thought maybe the head was cracked but I watched as it bubbled up around the bolt. The compound doesn't say it has to dry but it does say slow setting. Am I doing something wrong here? I've got some permatex No. 2B I'm thinking about putting in there. I'd appreciate any suggestions on this nagging problem. It's the bolt that's right up on the hump coming from the radiator hose.

I decided to take a hard look at this bolt and I guess it's good that I did. It's wallowed out in the middle and cracked on top of that. I wish the photo would show it better. I don't know how it got like this but I suspect I've narrowed the problem down. It's a wonder I didn't break it off in the head.

Is this by any chance a tractor only bolt or a common size? It has two very tight fitting washers under the head. Thanks.

HVW -- That condition you see in your head bolt is called "waisting" and is caused by over-tightening the bolt beyond the specified torque recommendations. It is the first step in the bolt elongating and then breaking. It's possible that only one has been overtightened on your engine but since you have found one, if it was my engine I'd buy a complete new set of head bolts and replace them all. Put on a new head gasket at the same time. Better safe than sorry. It can be a real pain removing the broken-off bit down in the block when a head bolt breaks off.

That"s the upper limit. Hope that stops the leak.
