Does anyone here live in Florida? My wife and I are thinking about relocating and are looking for a decent, quiet little coastal town where we can find jobs and a house for under a bizillion dollars. Thanks!!--Rob

Rob, I live in a nice little farming town by the name of Trenton Florida, about 50 miles north of Crystal River and about 20 miles inland of Ceder Key. Job are not good paying unless you live in a big city, the biggest city close to us is Gainesville, that 30 miles one-way. I'm in the IT job section, so computer jobs in Gainesville start in the 30 to 40K range, Secty jobs start around $9.00 - $12.00. But like I said that's in the big city, in the small town it's hard to find any good paying jobs over $9.00 an hours. Walmart starts there cashier at $6.00 and stock help @ $6.50. If you go further South the jobs pay better the houses are more and you have to learn a second language (unless you already know Spanish). My wife gave up a $40,000 a year job for a $20,000 just to live in the small town. I can't give up my job just yet because there are still things I want to buy. And a $30,000/40,000 a year would not allow me to do that. But good luck. And land around this small town, you can still buy 10 acres for around $30,000/35,000. and have a 2200/2500 sq. house built for around $85,000/$100,000. or you can find them already built for about the same.

I live in Tallahassee and I am a real estate agent, I am not too far from the Coast but know quiet a bit about the market as I managed the local MLS system for the last 10 years. Where in Virginia are you? I graduated from Prince George High Just out of Petersburg. E-Mail if interested in talking.

I would recommend that you check the job market in the Panhandle Area. Try pensacolanewsjournal.com

Depending on your marketable skills, the largest employers in the Panhandle area, at least around Pensacola area and as far east along the coast that I have been, are Health fields, Education fields, and Governmental jobs. All the rest are service industries such as hotels, restaurants, etc.

If I were to relocate along the Gulf Coast, I would probably choose the OCEAN SPRINGS, MISISSIPPI area. There, there are older homes that can be bought and restored, if you are handy. Biloxi Mississippi is only about 20 miles west. GAMBLING town.

I think the labor force, except for the Shipbuilding areas is quickly being favored to the Mexican labor force.

Contstruction jobs are available, however, again, I see a lot of contractors favoring the Mexican laborers.

Florida offers the "homestead" tax benefits. Your property taxes become lower after a year of residency. Mississippi, so I heard at the Ocean Springs Town Hall, real estate taxes are exempt until the value of the home reaches a certain level.

So, my point is, the entire GULF COAST has become "RETIREMENT" Heaven.

GOOD LUCK..... John,PA

Rob, look along the panhandle around Carabelle or from Steinhatchee north along the gulf coast. That area is about the last frontier in Florida. The east coast is about built out in my opinion.
Carabelle is a fishing town so I don't know about the job market. The further south you go the more it will cost on either coast.

Take a look also around Crystal River. Off water lots are available there for less than a gazillion dollars. Appalachicola is good also. Both it and Crystal River are near enough to cities to find work.

I may have made a mistake years ago moving from Florida. It's hard to get back once you've left. I envy you the opportunity.
