The old one was leaking so I bought a new one. Now trying to fix the old one. The old one is the original and I'd like to get it working. The leaking was caused by a bad bowl gasket and that was an easy fix.

The 'reserve' opening is clogged up. I've soaked it in wd40, acetone, lacquer thinner, boiled it in vinegar and water and tried blowing it out. Nothing so far has opened it more than just a slight seep. It's clear down to the opening inside the top stem. The top stem was full of rust when I took it out.

Is the shut-off brass stem supposed to come out? I've taken the brass nut off but the stem only turns out so far then stops. Fraid I'll break something if I turn it any harder.

Any suggestions?

I"m also trying to clean up my valve and have a question about the cylindrical filter screen that sticks up inside the gas tank. Is there some way to attach it to the body of the valve? It"s a snug fit, but I would hate to think of it working it"s way loose inside the tank. Would something like JB weld work?

The screens I've seen are attached. in reply to Spudds, 09-24-2004 18:00:46
Looks like it's soldered in there. If mine tore loose, I'd take my 400/800-degree hot-air paint-remover gun, heat the body until the solder just starts to melt, and stick the screen back in there. I'd try anyway; easy does it and don't bump or move anything. 60/40 solder melts at near 400-degrees.

The stem comes out but the packing is hard so it doesn't come out easy.
A drill bit twirled in your fingers will clear that reserve hole.
Whenever I change the oil, I try to remember to remove that bowl and open the valve full-open for just a sec to flush that hole and the bottom of the tank.

Thanks! Good idea on the flushing.

I clamped the stem in my wood vise and pulled up with all my might and the stem came out. Probably aught to make a new packing washer. Looks like leather.

Poked a wire down the hole and bunch of crud came out.

Know what? Maybe you don't have to in reply to MikeT , 09-24-2004 17:32:32
fuss over that packing. You can adjust that packing. You turn the valve stem in a turn or two, tighten the packing nut snug and check to see that you can't turn the stem. Then back off the packing nut just an 1/8" turn or so til the stem turns and fiddle with the nut until the valve stem turns with reasonable force. The stem will loosen with use and you can always tighten the packing nut.
You probably don't need to replace that packing.

Parts are available for that stem. Try New Holland because mail-order shipping charges kick your butt on that small order. TSC might have the entire stem assy.
