For all the electrically inclined,

The wiring on this old Pettibone forklift with an IH engine is terrible so I am replacing most of the wiring. Anyway here is the question. Had to get a new voltage regulator, coil and alternator and want to make sure they are hooked up correct. The voltage regulator has five leads labeled F, 2, 3, 4 and one on the side of the unit, The alternator has the standard terminals, but I am confused because it has a "F" and "R" connector where they connect. (The service manual I have doesn't give much detail) Any help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
rob

It appears you have a Delco alternator with EXTERNAL REGULATOR.

There are several ways to hook these systems up, depending upon if you are using an idiot light, a resistance wire in the harness (as was used on some GM vehicles those alternators were originally fitted to, as well as some industrial applications), or a simplified circuit with an ammeter.

I can supply you with several circuits, but not until tonight, when myself, the diagrams, and my scanner are all at the same location!

Email me, if that would help, or perhaps others will help before tonight.

(Or swap out the alternator for a 1 or 3 wire INTERNALLY REGULATED Delco, connected as we do the "'N"s.)

thanks,

any info would be great. I also emailed you. I have figured out that the F terminal on the regulator goes on the F terminal of the alternator. I think that the side terminal on the regulator as well as the one in the 4th position are for a ground. Still not sure where the others go. thanks

There may be a side terminal for ground, if it is not insulated from the metal frame of the regulator. If you are looking at an extra terminal that is insulated, it is probably for the connection of a radio noise suppression capacitor.

NONE of the terminals F234 get grounded.

"F" on the alternator is connected to "F" on the regulator.

I'll get you more information tonight.
