Got an old metal sheathed proofmeter cable for my Dad's 1963 Ford 2000 that is in great condition off of eBay. It turnes very freely, but remember reading somewhere you need to lubricate it from time to time. What do you use - regular motor oil?

TIA,
Dan

You'll find it in a hardware store. in reply to Dan, 09-28-2004 16:03:10
Graphite is the right lube for any tumbler lock & padlocks also. Throttle cables too. I have dry graphite and graphite in a quick-dry liquid carrier. You'll doom your proofmeter cable if you use oil.

Dry graphite. An automotive parts place may have some, for lubing speedometer cables. Of course, now that speedometer cables are a thing of the past, it may be tougher to find!

Here's one source:

I have some graphite lubricant here at the house. The tube says "Dry Graphite Lubricant with Molybdenum" - will this work?

TIA,
Dan

Moly additive is a step up from just graphite. Used to be a wonder lube on the market called "dry slide" that was molybdenum di-sulphide suspended in some kind of carrier that would evaporate off. It was great for applications like the cable where a wet lube would bring more gunk and eventually freeze up.

In my motorcycle days we would take our cables and put a plastic bag on both ends and tape it tightly around to seal it. Then hang the cable from one end and after tearing a hole in the upper bag, pour your lube in it. When the lube travels all the way through the cable it will fill the lower bag and you can be assured that it's lubed all the way through. Lots of variations on the approach but I think you get the idea.

good luck

Good Luck
