TSC Drawbar question

I have to pull a hay wagon around, and can't afford those $100+ original Dearborn drawbars I see on eBay from time to time. Has anyone purchased and used the one Tractor Supply carries? It is a straight heavy bar that bends up closer to one end and has a few holes on both ends. It is $35, and I want to ensure it can be used with the hitch mounted on the bottom of the 8N tractor. Also, how do you hook it up (which side does the bent part go to?) I already have the big 11 hole drawbar that goes to the eyes at the end of my lower lift arms, but I can't just put a hitch ball on that drawbar because it spins.

TIA,
Dan

Yes you can use the drawbar it fits I just bought one . but you may need the drawbar holder that fits around the PTO both are available from Ford/NewHollaND DEALER oR at least they are from my dealer does not matter if bend is up or down you can use both ways depends on how high you want the ball from the ground

If you desire that type of drawbar which actually is the safest you will need to purchase the whole 3 piece kit, fwd pivot bracket, rear hanger bracket that allows the bar to pivot or be pinned in any desired location center, left or right, that mounts around the PTO shaft and uses the same 4 bolt holes and lastly the drawbar you referenced. The bend will be behind the rear hangar and it must be pointed down. The earlier swinging drawbar bracket for the 11 hole bar is not used with this bar. Kit should be about $125-130.

Dan:
Sounds like your trying to install an aftermarket style swinging drawbar w/o the bracket & pin that bolts under the differential housing. There is also a 3rd part that bolts around the pto opening which allows you to lock the swinging drawbar in place(you don't want it flopping around back there). TSC should also sell the other two parts you need.

If you want to see pics of the parts, look under the "parts & pieces" photo gallery @ the left & search "swinging drawbar". I think someone posted several pics earlier this year.

Dan..... ...the bent swinging drawbar slides thru a brackett bolted to a flatboss under the 8N differential housing (9N&2N's don't have the boltholes so you can't use the bent swinging drawbar) I mounted my bent swinging drawbar with the short end bend up so the trailer ball knocks yer kneecap instead of your ankle.

You can get a 11-hole drawbar "LOCK" ($20, cheap) that will prevent it from rotating when you "PULL" a trailer...BUT...don't try to BACKUP because your hydraulic arms will lift unless you have the triangulating adjustable stableizer bars installed between the ends of the 11-hole drawbar and the 3-point top-link under yer buttbuckett..... ..Dell

Red Rock Mfg also makes a neat reproduction but it"s kinda pricey.

Dale: I got an 8N & need to start pulling my trailer around instead a pushin it. Right now, I got a trailer ball on the front bumper.

Where can you git 1 of the $20 drawbar locks?
DO you use it by itself or with a drawbar attached to the 3 point lift arms?
I do run stabilizer bars on the 3 point lift arms.
Thanks. GA Jim

Jim..... ...most tractor parts stores (you might haffta ask) have the 11-hole drawbar lock. about $20. It should be intuitively obvious you have to use it with the 11-hole drawbar. It stops the 11-hole drawbar from rotating with the trailer ball sticking up..... ...Dell

Dell: Thanks for 'splainin it. I left the farm in '56 when I was 6. And we had an old Allis Chalmers "B', an old AC WD, and an old Farmall. None of them had a 3 pointer - just a fixed drawbar.

Just got back into it with a '52 8N after I bought 15 Acres. But...I'm lovin it!

Thanks Dell, I was also wondering if the TSC Drawbar hole was big enough to accept the OEM clevis hitch pin. My tractor is about 45 miles away, and I "thought" the pin might be a little larger than the hole in the TSC drawbar... I figured I could lay the bent bar up on top of my 11 hole bar for support I would guess.

11-hole has 3/4 holes. in reply to Dan, 09-30-2004 16:23:27
third party image

Take a 3/4" hitch pin with you. I took the tongue off an old planter and used it for a drawbar lock. You really need the drawbar stays with the 11-hole drawbar.

Rob,
Is that a hole in the tongue peeking out from behind the lift arm? If so, an upside down "J" bolt over the arm and through the tongue will hold it. (Yeah, I know. If"n it AIN"T a hole, you"re capable of installing the appropriate one.)

Yep. in reply to Russ in SoCal, 09-30-2004 23:14:06
There are two holes and if I had a different bolt I might have used it. Those two holes bolted the tongue onto the planter. The big hole at the drawbar was the hitch pin hole. As it was, I was looking at that old planter and notice the tongue and thought it would keep the drawbar from tipping. I pulled it off, grabbed that long bolt because I figured it needed something to keep it alligned, and installed it. That was the full extent of the engineering and design on that project! Price was right too.

I can't tell from the pic how you have your "lock" bar attached to the lower lift arm.
Or does it allow your bar to rotate forward?

Jeff

I used it just like that for awhile but one day I found a 3" piece of angle iron, maybe 2"x2"x1/8"...pretty light stuff, that had a hole in it. I put the angle on that long bolt and spun a nut on there. It hangs loose on the bolt but I flip it over the lift arm and it prevents the bar from rolling forward when there's nothing hooked on the bar.
That's the only time the bar can roll forward, when there's nothing connected. If something is pinned to the bar the bar won't roll. If there is something on the ball it will tip back and forward some but the ball won't roll out of the receiver. The ball is clamped into the receiver.

Great idea Rob. That might work if I can just find some stout metal bent like your pic.

Yeah, that old junk planter... in reply to Dan, 09-30-2004 16:56:59
has some good iron on it. I think the piece can be straight, it's the holes in it that are hard to come by. Anything, so the bar can't twist.
Fact is, I pulled trailers before I put that iron on there. Pulled them from a ball too. It only twisted so far. I wasn't pulling but a few hundred pounds though.
If you have a clevis on the hay trailer you won't need a lock.

hay wagons usually don't use a ball mount, but a clevis. Anyway, my version of the eleven holer drawbar is home made and has welded tabs to stop it from rotating. They just sit under the lift arms. I've pulled my 4000 pound camper with it with zero probs. yes, you need the adjustable link bars or mine are solid, to keep the lift arms from rising when you back up.
