Take a 3/4" hitch pin with you. I took the tongue off an old planter and used it for a drawbar lock. You really need the drawbar stays with the 11-hole drawbar.

Rob,
Is that a hole in the tongue peeking out from behind the lift arm? If so, an upside down "J" bolt over the arm and through the tongue will hold it. (Yeah, I know. If"n it AIN"T a hole, you"re capable of installing the appropriate one.)

Yep. in reply to Russ in SoCal, 09-30-2004 23:14:06
There are two holes and if I had a different bolt I might have used it. Those two holes bolted the tongue onto the planter. The big hole at the drawbar was the hitch pin hole. As it was, I was looking at that old planter and notice the tongue and thought it would keep the drawbar from tipping. I pulled it off, grabbed that long bolt because I figured it needed something to keep it alligned, and installed it. That was the full extent of the engineering and design on that project! Price was right too.

I can't tell from the pic how you have your "lock" bar attached to the lower lift arm.
Or does it allow your bar to rotate forward?

Jeff

I used it just like that for awhile but one day I found a 3" piece of angle iron, maybe 2"x2"x1/8"...pretty light stuff, that had a hole in it. I put the angle on that long bolt and spun a nut on there. It hangs loose on the bolt but I flip it over the lift arm and it prevents the bar from rolling forward when there's nothing hooked on the bar.
That's the only time the bar can roll forward, when there's nothing connected. If something is pinned to the bar the bar won't roll. If there is something on the ball it will tip back and forward some but the ball won't roll out of the receiver. The ball is clamped into the receiver.

Great idea Rob. That might work if I can just find some stout metal bent like your pic.

Yeah, that old junk planter... in reply to Dan, 09-30-2004 16:56:59
has some good iron on it. I think the piece can be straight, it's the holes in it that are hard to come by. Anything, so the bar can't twist.
Fact is, I pulled trailers before I put that iron on there. Pulled them from a ball too. It only twisted so far. I wasn't pulling but a few hundred pounds though.
If you have a clevis on the hay trailer you won't need a lock.

hay wagons usually don't use a ball mount, but a clevis. Anyway, my version of the eleven holer drawbar is home made and has welded tabs to stop it from rotating. They just sit under the lift arms. I've pulled my 4000 pound camper with it with zero probs. yes, you need the adjustable link bars or mine are solid, to keep the lift arms from rising when you back up.
