I am using a Ford 8N with a 3-point mounted brush hog. 1st gear seems very fast for first gear in a tractor and creates some busy moments when trying to work around stumps, rocks, trees etc. Does this tractor have a low and high range selector like some other tractors have? I have not been able to see any obvious levers, etc. that could be a selector. This tractor belongs to a frind and he does not have a manual for it. Thanks for the help.

Was running initially at about 1/2 throttle and eventually slowed it down to about 1/4 but gotta keep up some revs or the brush hog don't work too well. Cleaning up trails cut through woods with waist-high grass, weeds and brush along with a few stumps and partially exposed rocks for excitement. Sure wish I could slow down to a slow crawl so I had more time to look ahead. Finally hit a stumb and broke my PTO adaptor. Thanks for the advice though.

Unfortunately, the N tractors have a PTO that is geared to the transmission. The slower the tractor goes, the slower the PTO goes. Ideally one would like to run in low gear and have 540 rpm on the PTO. Bust a lot more shear pins running the PTO at low rpm's.

Your hog does have shear pins don't it? Better get some if not. Get Grade 2.

1/4 throttle on an 8n in 1st gear should be barely moving...I don't even see how it was cutting at that speed...

Yep.. N's are geared pretty fast.. but 1st should be fine for most mowing.. unless ya got lotsa hills / trees / holes.

Check for an aux tranny.. the shifter lever is usually located right in front of either foot depending on whether it is a hup or sherman.. should go into the bell housing rear of the clutch, befor ethe tranny.

there were also a few cable operated sherman aux trannies.. I think the pull cable went into the ?right? side upper area of the bell housing.. again.. aft of the clutch.. but before the tranny. Cable jobs were usually only the very early models. Somehting that would have been deale rinstalled to your 8n would have an L or dog leg shifter.. unless someone actually mounted an older cable shifter style sherman in an 8n? Or.. you could simply be used to the creeper gear sets of other modern tractors.

Might be a lever in front in reply to Dave Bohn, 10-06-2004 06:36:56
of your left foot but it's optional. Might be a cable on the right but either way it's between the engine and the tranny.
That 1st gear is only like 3-1/2mph; just less than walking speed. Might just take some getting used to.
