My 50 8N front distributer started running extremely rought the other day. I baby'd it back to the garage. Started looking last night and found broken distributer cap. Odd? Bought new one at farm and fleet today for 9.99 and also bought tuneup kit for 11.99. Will install tonight. With the previous postings i read regarding this and page 57 of the FO-4, replaceing and setting the points should be fairly strait forward. Any suggestion or tips let me know. Thanks Mike

Raise the left front wheel up as high as it will go and then where the axle touches the axle support when the right front wheel is all the way up weld a 3/4" nut right where the axle meets the support when the right side goes up. This will prevent the axle hitting the distributor cap and you will still have plenty of movement of the front axle.

Zane,
Axle hitting it may have been the culprit. I was pulling junk cars out to get them on a trailer and I know the front wheels were bouncing off of other scrap at times bringing the elevation of the front end up. thanks MikeR

Yeah, time to look at the front axle. in reply to MikeR, 10-06-2004 14:02:03
That entire front axle is riding on a single kingpin there in the middle. The bushing goes and the pin wears and maybe the axle support gets beat all to heck and the axle starts banging the distributor and lower radiator hose bib. If the axle support is beat up the radiator neck doesn't fit the hood right and you might not have room to remove the oil filter.
All of that; the hood, radiator, and the front axle hang on the axle support so if it gets mishapen it makes for many little bugaboos.
Tear in to it, inspect it carefully, and repair or replace any worn or damaged parts.
