Greetings from Vermont,
I'm looking for plans and materials list for
hooking up external hydraulics on my 8N so I can
operate a 3 point hitch log splitter.
Any suggestions or links related to this subject would
be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone using the splitter that uses the tractors pump and engine as offered by Northern Tools catalog have any input yeah or nay on the setup?
Thanks / Barry

I make a live hydraulics kit for the N tractor.

See the link below for more information on it and other stuff.

3 options for a log splitter. Get one as a self contained unit... get an aux pump for your N.. like a front stinger pump, a rear pto pump, or a live thang live hyds pump from zane sherman. Last option is to simply tap your internal hyds thru your corner test port.

1st option is the most expensive.. 2nd option is the next cheapest in costs, and last option is the cheapest. 1st two options will yeild good fast action on the log splitter. last option will work.. but you must keep in mind the displacement of your N pump and the log splitter cylinder.. ( 2.85 gpm/1700 psi on a good day for the N ).( the N-pump will be the slowest but cheapest way to do it. If this is for hobby use.. I might try it as you can hook it up with a minimum of parts.. and don't even need a spool valve.. the hytrol lever on your N will handle the duty. All you'll need to do is chain the uper lift arms down to the axle to divert pressure from the 3pt tot he pressure test port where you would hook your supply hose to the SA cylinder on your log splitter. A stiff and hefty return spring (s) will be needed to retract the cylinder after you release pressure. If you went with a OC external spool valve you could use a DA cylinder and not use the springs.. and have power in / power out... but then that is adding cost. If you have some scrap iron and welding skills, and a surplus SA cylinder.. all you will need is a single hyd hose and a couple springs to make a quick and dirty log splitter... oh yeah.. a splittingwedge might help too! )

First off, Thanks Zane and Soundguy for all the info and options.
Soundguy, What do you guess the cycle time would be if I went the cheap route using the internal pump
and a single hose and pull back springs? Just need it for the stuborn crotch wood that I used to save for hangovers in the past . I'm getting older now but not necessarily wiser.

Impossible to tell without knowing the displacement in the rest of the circuit ( cylinder size.. etc.)

It will be slower than an aux pump.. however.. we are not talking about a super large cylinder, and it is only one cylinder. I think it should do fine for non-comercial use considering some people run front loaders with power up via 1 or 2 lift cyls, and a manual trip dump, off the corner test port. Now that's a tad slow.. but works if you need a maneuer rake or something.

Good luck.. and take some pics!
