OT - Battery Drain

I have an old 1971 forklift that I have finally figured out the wiring on it so it charges my battery. However, I still have a short somewhere because the new battery gets drained overnight if I leave the cables attached. From looking at the archievs, there are two probable culprits: 1. the ignition switch might be bad allowing current to flow through even when shut off. 2. A bad voltage regulator (external) which is new, but could have been damaged before I figured out the new wiring schmatic. Was wondering if any of you could verify my assessment or recommend other causes and if possible, give me some test that can be done to verify the culprit of the short.

thanks

Does the engine shut down when you turn the key off? If so, it's probably - PROBABLY - not that. I suppose it could be the ACC circuit, if there is one, though.

Get yourself a small ammeter and connect it between the battery post and the cable. Then start disconnecting wires until it reads zero, and you'll have found the troublesome circuit.

Rob..... ...what Dan sez..... .except I'd use a test light inseries with the battery post and the battery cable instead of an ammeter, they're hard to read and when that light goes OUT, you imediately know about it. This allows you to concentate on your wire connections that you are un-doing. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

Thanks, Dell. In my everyday life teaching folks how these newfangled airliners work, I sometimes make things too complicated and forget the simple methods.
