When I split the tractor do I need to have the oil and or transmission fluids drained in order to work on the clutch? I'm taking the tractor apart because when I step on the clutch pedal I can't shift into any gear (really bad grinding ). I tried clamping the clutch down for two weeks and that didn't work. Now when I get her apart any ideas what I should be looking to fix. Thanks.

When you posted on the other board, it sounded like the clutch was not engaging (grabbing and transmitting power).

Now the we know it's not releasing, there is still some hope to jar it loose, if it's rusted, without splitting the tractor. Enter "stuck clutch" in the search box at the top of the page for a lot of ideas on how to break it free.

OK I just saw your post on the main board where I don't need to worry about draining the hydraulic/tranny fluid. I'm guessing the oil is not free flowing into the flywheel / clutch housing but not sure?

Bob - Thanks for the response. Regrets about the ambigious post on the main board. I 've searched the archives and I'm just not up for starting it in gear and dropping it off a lift. I'm determined to take it apart, if for no other reason just to do it. Appreciate any advice on what I need to do to get the clutch released once its split and if I need to drain the fluids in order to get it done.

Once you get it split, just remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel, and the pressure plate and the stuck clutch disc (lined plate) will most likely unstick and fall off the flywheel. If the clutch is in good shape, you can lightly sand the flywheel and the pressure plate and put it back together. It is possible for a clutch that won't release to be caused by lining that has come loose, or doubled up, so check for that. Be sure to note which side of the clutch plate goes against the flywheel, and reinstall it that way. (Assuming is was correct before.)

Check out the pilot and throwout bearings while you're in there, and consider replacing them as PM, even if they seem OK.

You'll need a clutch alignment tool to keep the lined plate centered as you reinstall the pressure plate. You can remove the transmission input shaft, and use that as your alignment tool, and while you're in there, replace the seal in the bearing retainer, to prevent leaks into the clutch housing. (You don't have to drain the tranny oil to do that, either.)

Re: Rusted Clutch in reply to Rob G (KS), 11-21-2004 06:44:34
I just split my 8-N after trying every possible way to jar my frozen clutch loose. I also learned why my solenoid would just click in the cold of our NEng. winter. A mouse must have got in through the timing hole and built a nest. It blocked the drainage holes. I had 3-4" of water in there which would freeze up the flywheel. I used a torch on the rusted screw holding the timing hole cover so it stays where it should to prevent future mouse nest problems.
