I just split the tractor to fix a stuck clutch, now I got a split transmission case cause I got in a hurry. The trailer jack I used to support the tranny and rear end let go at the ring gear. I should have welded on a support bracket instead of using the bracket on the swing away type trailer jack (others beware). I know its asking a lot but could this possibly repaired using JB Weld? I figure its an outside shot but I have to ask what you all think. Pardon me now while I kick myself again. Thankfully no broken toes or crushed appendages. third party image

Rob. Here's an option. This guy has 5 tranny cases. You could buy 'em all and sell off the ones you don't need and wind up on the positive side cash-wise.

Five cases on eBay, south of Dallas, no bidders. Cut a deal for one maybe if he doesn't sell, or buy all five, and sell the extras.

Ouch!!
I see some N series tranny cases for sale on ebay (at least they were there on Sat.). Course, I am not sure what you would do with the 3-4 extra ones now that you learned your lesson (grin)

Based on feedback (thanks) I'm going to pass on the JB Weld option and locate a new transmission case. If anybody has one they want to sell in the KS / MO area let me know.

I used to sell complete NICE empty housings for $100.00-$125.00 quite often. People who part out 8Ns will be happy to sell one to you just ask around. Boy that baby was leaking! I would try to pick up a complete Trans and housing for around 250.00 or less and save yourself a lot of hassle and have all the shims right and ready to go on if it was me. That way you could have some spare parts or sell them to offset your loss. Mark H.

Good lord that is painful to see. In my trials to locate a reasonable tranny replacement for my project, I have seen 8N tranny housings pretty cheap. As has been pointed out earlier, because this break is in a structural support area, I would not suggest JB Weld. Better to spend the < $100 and fix it now, then have it fail in use and cost much more, plus risk personal safety.

Sorry about the misfortune, I can sure relate!

Good luck,
Dan

Rob, I'd use Magnum steel.I'd file and or drill several places where the magnum steel can be forced through and meet itself on the other side. It is really tough stuff..I think much better than JB.

Rob,

I feel your pain. I hate when projects start out small and take a turn like this. Just throws a wrench in the budget. I would look for a used housing. You may get lucky and find one for short money. I would think that it not being a wearing item, someone might let one go for cheap money.

Jeez Rob..... ...I feel yer PAIN..... .memo to self.....

Heck yes, I'd try some J&B Weld. Iff'n it don't work yer only out $5 (cheap). CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN and did I say CLEAN? probably haffta grind it alittle bitt. Cover the wet puckey with some coarse sandpaper so it don't look like puckey but looks like castiron after you paint it. Stops embarrassing questions..... ....Dell

Well, look at the bright side, it doesn't look like your throwout bearing was lacking for lubrication!

A proper fix can be made for perhaps $100.00 by locating a spare housing, and transferring your parts to it. Someone else on this board had a similar misfortune a couple of weeks ago, and were able to locate a reasonably priced good used housing, rather than welding their's, or attempting a less permanent repair.

Hi Rob ,I know exactly how you feel ,I also droped my 8n about 6weeka ago , cracked the trans case in 3 places it was to much to weld and it didnt have any loose parts on the ground.Look around for a bare trans housing or a used tranny JB weld aint going to do it. The bell housing is a strucural member so you sure as h#$* dont want a patch job to fail on you or whoever else mihgt use this machine. Having said that I was able to find a case for $100 and have spent less than $80 on new bearings ,gaskets ,seals, shifter parts ect. I now have a fresh transmission and shifter which took care of some problems I was having that I probably woudn't have adressed if not for the accident, so hang in there it is fixable and not as bad as you might think once ya get started and you coundnt buy better advise than what you find on this forum.
