It has been said here before that the 8N ain't the tractor for every job. I love my 8N but would like something more heavy duty. Moreover, I would like a tractor with a FEL at the very least, and a backhoe would be awesome. I would like to build a pond in the future, as well as do some land clearing (stump digging; hence the backhoe) So thats why I am thinking about the combo. I looked at the Kubota bx series and it looks like what I want, but I didn't even bother to ask "how much" 'cause I knew I wasn't gonna like what I heard. I was wondering if any of you had any expierence with the BX series (and know how much they cost) and wheather you would recommend them. OR, if ya'll have any other suggestions. By the way, I have no intention of ever getting rid of my 8N. It just runs too darn well! Thanks for your time!----Rob

I just told my wife the truth, I AM A TRACTOR COLLECTOR. We now have 50 Fords 1939-1964 that we have collected since 1998. Last week we did get a 1210 Ford compact,a better tractor than our Kubota 7100. both are HST. As for a backhoe We have a nice 850 Ford with Sherman HOE, digs real good. Do not tell stories to your lovely LADIES, believe me most of them know more about tractors than we think, and "stories" are an insult to their intelligence.P.S. I can not see how you can get your job done with less than 3-6 tractors. BURT married 38 years (same LADY). Good luck.

Yes, Yes, Yes, You should be banned from the biscussion board, and forced to sell (cheap !!)your 8n to a board member in good standing. I'll be around to pick it up soon, how's $1,000 sound?

Really, of course not, I just want to know how you guys convince your wife's that more than one tractor in the barn is necessary!!

Like sounder says, the second one is an easy sell. Good to have a backup. It also gives her something to kind of lay claim to. After all sometimes they want to drive them too. My third tractor was easy as well. A guy gave me an AC WC. Needs lots of work but that's half the fun. No woman can expect her man to turn down a free tractor. Beyond that, I know if you look in the archives you will find all the excuses you'll ever need to get another tractor, and another, and another. In fact, YT should put a link to the left "Reasons and justifications" for buying another tractor. The one justification that should work every time (not to be used right away, use this one only if the others are not working) It will keep you around the house instead of out chasing skirts with the boys. Just had to chime in. Eric

A second tractor is actually pretty easy to swing. Any more than that requires lots of time, prep, and work.

For the second tractor, it also helps if it is fundamentally different is some way.. either size, or for it's intended chore.. etc. Some guys keep a small CUT and an old ag tractor. the old ag tractor gets the big bruser work, and the cut gets the stuff that needs agility.

Another key selling point is to use the 2nd tractor as a backup for chores when the first tractor is down for repair or service. A really great use of the second tractor is to use it to help repair the first tractor. For instance, I use a 2nd tractor and a boom pole to lower the hood/gastank onto my 8n when I rebuilt the steering. My wife helped me take it off.. but didn't like it at all... so.. i HAD to use the tractor to help me put it back on.

Incedentaly.. this works for implements as well. I had wanted a 3PT spreader for fertalizer/seed.. with didn't want to shell out for one. So when it came time to seed/fertalize our 3ac around the house.. we went out by hand and with a little walk behind spreader. After a couple hours of work.. and being nowhere near finished, she came up with an idea.. that we needed a spreader on the tractor...

I never have any problem when I tell my wife I'm going to look at another tractor. Right now I have 2 Fords, 2 JDs, 2 Allis's, 1MM, 1Farmall and 6 Olivers and maybe have left one or 2 out of the list.

I'll post a picture of it in just a few minutes in the tractor photo area. The hoe is made by a company call Scout, I have no idea how old it is, but do know it will dig almost 18 feet deep.

I am always amazed at the absolute obsession guys have for backhoes. Try TractorSmart. They have sale prices posted. (BX23 w/ backhoe & loader = $15,800) Also Carver Kubota. That will show you ballpark prices so you won't get ripped off too badly at your local store.

Look at the pictures I have up on the web and you may understand why. :-)

They are just SO handy!! I don"t have any picts of my using the grab hook I put on my 8 inch bucket but that allows my to use the hoe as a crane for lifting - can only lift so much, of course, but for those things that I need to lift that I can, it SURE is handy!

Larry

Rob,

I have a Ford 3000 that I mount a Woods back hoe on, very handy! not all that cheap. :-( BUT I think it is well worth it. $5K in 3000 and $5.5 in hoe and 3 buckets.

Here is a web site that has some pictures of it.
Link
You will have to remove the *"s first - they are necessary to get thru the filter that does not like that web site.

Larry

I bought the hoe NEW! with an 8", 16" and 24" buckets. With the three point hitch hook up I can use the 3000 for other heavy work and the 8N for "support" such as hauling posts, wire and nails for fence building - post hole auger on the 3000 - for example.

You should be able to find a 3000 - there is one in Warrenton - but a used hoe will be HARD to find! I would not part with mine! Just too many things I can do with it. Plus I do not need to wait on anyone to do a "hoe" job.

I have a close friend who many years ago pointed out the old adage of getting the right tool for the job; the occasion was when we were renovating my house & my third el-cheapo circular saw quit. Ever since, I've just paid the price for the best quality tool w/ the knowledge that I would not be buying another one 2 years down the road. This same friend now owns a used back-hoe w/ a huge bucket that he used to build his pond, clear a pasture, etc. And, after all the work is done, he will sell it for probaly more than he paid for it. Trying to use a tractor for the jobs you describe will be very frustrating. Short of buying a used backhoe, consider the fact that an lot of work can be done in 8-16 hours by someone who knows what they are doing. $1000 to rent the operator & equipment will get a lot done!

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Traitor? nope...

Many of us have different flavors of tractors all setting together out in the barn.. I've got a red and green old one setting next to my grey, red/grey, and blue ones.
