Busted tranny case (sick to tears) UPDATE

I found a replacement tranny case for my 8N at Jim Cook's Tractors in Clinton, MO for $100. He's got salvage parts for all kinds of tractors; also some new in the box 8/9/2-N gauges, clutches, brakes, etc. It was a 2 1/2 drive one way but well worth it. Now that I've got myself into this pickle I'm wondering if there are any tricks for taking the tranny parts out of one case and putting 'em into another.

1- What seals do I need (I know about the input shaft seal)?
2- How do you drive out the two horizontal bars that transverse the front of the tranny case and then how do you reinstall them (the one for the clutch fork and the other for the LH brake)?
3- Since I'll be separating the tranny case from the rear end is there any preventive maintenance I should be doing in that area (pump or PTO)?
4- Is moving the transmission just a matter of installing the gears/shafts in the right order or is there some kind of alignment gear, notch, or tool I should be looking for? 5- Any shims, spacers, or bearings required for the transmission gears?
6- Any other newbie advice for this job greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a Happy Turkey Day!!

Hey Rob congradulations, your about 25% finished already! Like I posted before I had the same accident you did . Get and use F 4 manuel it has part#s and pictures that are life savers. Drain your fuild, pull yer pto, pull pto shifter plate ,drop yer old trans. then STOP AND LOOK at the condition ( endplay and slop on main shaft ,countershaft ect.)if your original trans was ok you may only have to swap parts old to new.Make yourself a CLEAN table then remove and lay out your parts front to rear .You dont have to take the individual gears off the shafts, can remove each shaft as a assembully thru the top of shifter opening. The shifter rails will slide out after you remove the spings and balls.Study the F4 diagrams Youll have to drive the pin out of the clutch fork to remove it ,the brake shaft has a bolt and moon key.As for bearings inspect them carefully for excess wear and damage if you repace them you might have to adj the shims (not hard but time consuming) check the archives for any thing posted by Zane, regarding Bearings ect.or email me if I can help ,Im no expert but like I said I have lived your bad dream AINT TRACTORS FUN ;} Roy

Doing the same thing on my NAA Project Rustbucket. The pic is what I saw when I first took delivery of the tractor... I am getting new tranny guts from John Smith and took out the old rusted gears and shafts in preparation. I cannot give a definitive answer on all questions, but I can help you with some.

1 - Input seal, main shaft gasket, countershaft gasket, shifter cover gasket, gasket between the tranny housing and differential housing. This is all I could identify, and hopefully all I need as that is all I ordered...

2 - The clutch release shaft and the left brake shaft can just be pulled/twisted out. Of course, you need to remove the clutch fork from the clutch release shaft first, which can be a dog (and was for me). Replace both press-in bushings on both sides (4 total) before you replace. These are removed and installed with bushing drivers, and the brake shaft and clutch release shaft bushings are different sizes.

3 - Clean it good of gunk with kerosene.

4 - Follow the I&T manual, and remember and retain the metal shims from your old setup. This will get you close on your bearing preload on re-assembly. No special tools were needed for me.

5 - Yes, see #4. Also, now is a good time to inspect and/or replace any bad or pitted bearings on your main and counter shafts. But they are hard to remove and press on, so be ready for a job if needed.

6 - The main and counter shafts and all gears come out together. It is really pretty straight forward, just follow the I&T manual. This was my first time, and I was really amazed at how straight forward it was. Keep track of all detent balls and springs...

Good luck,
Dan
