Ok, here's my stupid question. I have a 51 8N with the side distributor. I just bought it in late fall to handle my snow. It ran fine then but has gradually worsend with a lot of blowby and getting very tough to start when below +20. I have changed to electronic ignition but is still 6 volt. Compression is low at about 80. I want to re ring it to hold over till spring and then give it a complete. Is there any way I can find out if it has 3 or 4 ring pistons so I can have parts on hand before I start. I just know if I tear it down to find out we will get a foot of snow the next day. Motor looks to have been untouched for a great many years. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For the time it takes to tear it down.. ya might as well plastigauge the mains and journals and slap in new shells while it is out if the crank is otherwise good.. right?

If you plan on doing a rebuild wouldn't you buy new sleeves and pistons anyway. So it would not matter which way you went.I'm just going through the process right now.I checked and found that to buy rings only it would cost $177.66.To buy a rebuild kit that comes with pistons ,sleeves, rings and piston pins was $233.69.For the extra few $ why not go the whole route.Good luck.

It's my understanding that there were 3 ring and 4 ring pistons, i believe the earlier ones were 4 rings. There would be no way to tell though, and even if there was, what's to say someone hadn't changed it from original? Not to mention that it's maybe been bored out .010 or whatever. Not everyone puts new sleeves in these, most of the ones I've seen have been bored.

STOCK 8N pistons have 3-rings. You can get aftermarket pistons that have three or four rings, so you will not know for sure until you open it up.
