My 1947 2n has a blower on the 3-point which works fine, but I"m getting tired of backing up all the time. I"m thinking of running a hydraulic pump on the pto to power a hydraulic motor on the blower in front. Up and down could be accomplished with a small elecric winch. The handle on the crank could be extended so the driver could still turn the shute without leaving the drivers seat. Sound like a plan? Has anyone tried something like this with any success? If so, I would appreciate any pointers or pictures. Thanks, BJ

If you are going to that extent why not put it in place of the bucket on a loader? I mechanized my chute with a hydraulic motor and a cable wrapped around the chute. Works great. Can change chute direction from inside the cab by pushing lever one way or the other. I agree about turning around, but I like the weight on the back wheels for traction. You will probably need a counterbalance or chains at the least.

Hi BJ. Sometime in the last 6 months I seen a posting that showed a snowblower that mounts on the 3 pt. that is pulled foreward. These are new ones not the old Erskines, but they may now be made by Erskine,in MN. since they are under new ownership. Ron

You could run a pump off a stinger shaft on the crank and have the whole package self-contained. Sounds like a great idea no matter what.

Do you have problems with your rearward facing blower due to reverse gear being too tall?

Hydaulic pump in front? in reply to Bob - MI, 01-20-2005 12:37:10
Is there a pump like that available, from Ford or aftermaket, which would run off the front of the engine?

Right here on this web site as a matter of fact.

Revers is a little tall. If the snow is real deep, like a foot or more, I have to make two passes, the first with the blower off the ground a few inches, and then the last pass all the way down.

How wide is your blower? How big of a hydraulic motor are you figuring on using?
I have a blower on the back of a 2N that I turn the tires around on for better back up traction. I looked at turning the seat around and adapting the peddles and steering but the rest of the year the 2N is usually going froward so that is probably not a good ideal.
I do have a self powered snow blower but with a V465D Wisconsin on it it likely weighs about a ton which I believe is a little more than my little 2N end wants to pick up on the front.

I think my blower is about 5 feet wide. I don't know much about hydraulic pumps so I'm not sure yet how big a pump I would need. How many horse is your Wisconsin motor on your blower. That's not a bad idea to have a separate motor on the blower. I wonder how big of a Briggs or Kohler engine it would take to run my blower. I think my 1947 2N is only rated in the high 20hp to low 30hp. It has no trouble running the blower and turning the wheels. I wonder if a 14 horse motor could run just the blower.

My big blower with the Wisconsin is rated 65.9Hp brand new. That is on an eight foot wide machine with two augers plus the blower. This is one of the machine you may have seen eating up snow banks in the city. I believe 20-30Hp may be about right. A 2N just rebuilt may be rated around 20 something HP but that is rated standing still and the tractor moving is eating up some of that HP to. So a 14Hp may work in dry snow but for wet stuff I believe you would need more. As for hydraulic motors that big it may be expensive for any thing but surplus. A good place to look is at surpluscenter.com.

Snow blowers require lots of HP. A 14 HP engine would not be nearly enough for a 5 foot blower except in the lightest snowfalls and/or the slowest ground speeds. Once saw a friend using a 90 HP Case on an 8 foot snowblower. In deep snow and/or drifts it was all his tractor wanted.

The problem with rear mount snow blowers on Ns is the too-high reverse gear in conjunction with the lack of adequate HP, live hydraulics, and live PTO.

Your 2N is rated at about 23 1/2 HP at the PTO.

A 6 foot rear blade and tire chains is probably a better solution.
