How much mud...

I found out today how much mud it takes to get an 8N stuck. It seems the ground wasn't quite as frozen as I thought it was. What a mess! I can't imagine hitting a muddy spot like that while you had a plow hooked up. It was kinda unnerving, cause I just was going along and the front wheels just went down in what seemed like solid ground, and the back tires followed. When I tried to back up, it was like quicksand. I shoulda taken some pictures, but I didn't think about it until I had it out. Anyone else have any good "I buried my tractor" stories, so I won't feel so bad? ---Rob

Tried crossing a creek on the backside of my place one time that I shouldn't have..Had my backblade on,got one side of it against a tree, other side hung in a big root, tires are in the bottom of the creek, blade and trees are up on about a 3 ft. embankment, the more I spin and fight it,the less creekbottom I have under my tires..what a mess..I end up in the creek up to my waist, trying to get the blade unhooked from the 8N,with a highlift jack and a chain,I finally get it unhooked, drive the N out of the creek,go around to the only other crossing and pull the backblade out backwards..Never tried crossing there again with anything..

When we had the big snowfall here right before Christmas, I managed to stick my 4X4 Kubota with chains on both ends while plowing snow when I got a little too far into a ditch and could neither steer it back onto the road or back up. In fromt of me was a 4 foot snow pile that I had deposited there already. Fortunately, it took only about 15 minutes to dig away enough snow to get it out.

On another occassion, about 30 years ago, I stuck my Dad's 51 8N complete with bush hog when I got too close to the creek. It went down quickly on both ends. Fortunately, I had the good sense to stop trying to get it out before burying it too much and the 42 AC WC pulled it right out even without anyone driving the 8N.

Haven't stuck mine in mud yet but buired it in 4 ft of snow on a side angle. It just keep getting in deeper sliding in till the snow was way above the middle of the back tires and the front tires were under the snow and haft way up the radiator. Had to use a Logging Skidder to pull it out with! Mark H.

I have done that more than once. Worst was when I did it near the road and a photographer got a picture that ended up on the front page of the local paper!!!

I've had my N for 6 years or so. I've had to dig it out 4 times, each time had stuff in the FEL. The last time/worst time required the neighbors 4x4 1-ton to help. I needed to push that manure pile back just "one more inch"....cost me 4 hours, not to mention diggin around in all that good stuff (real big grin). I've thought about swapping front hubs for wider front tires, took the loader off instead.

Years ago I did that with my 8N with back hoe, ended up turning it all the way around useing the back hoe took me about 2 hours to do so but that was the olny way it was going to come out.

i once sunk a 2000 in the mud, it had a fel, and while i could raise the front end out of the mud, i couldn't move the tractor, being a typical redneck, i got the mm jetstar3 and hooked it to the rear of the ford, eased out the clutch and the mm decided to rotate on its axle, rather than pull the ford out, i was able to get the clutch in and the front end slammed back down,i spent 9 hours with jacks, a shovel and wood blocks getting it out, i had a pretty gal checking on me once in awhile, but she said the last thing she thought i might want was a woman's opinion on the problem, i should have married that one! ericlb
