A wild idea crossed my mind the other day, and I was wondering if anyone had tried it or heard of someone trying it. I was thinking of using an N motor as an inboard motor for a boat. I was thinking it would be perfect because of its durability and longevity. I just wouldn't know where to begin with the outdrive and cooling. I figured if someone could modify a flathead v8 for an N surely this is possible. What do ya'll think?---Rob

I think that an old aircooled VW engine would be better for that task. You have more HP (36-55 HP) and it will rev higher and be much lighter than a tractor engine, not to mention the added benefit of needing no radiator. VW engines are somewhat popular in homebuilt aircraft applications as well.

When I was a kid my dad got ahold of a real old inboard boat. It had been "converted" to a Model A engine and it did a nice job for what it was. The boat started falling apart and we took out the motor in the 80"s and rebuilt it...still going today.

Got lost in a big Byaue with some of my Air Force buddies back in 1956 South of Alexandria Louisiana. We called ourselves fishing and spent the night on a little island with nothing to eat but mosquitoes.

Next morning we got back into our boat with the 25 HP Buchaneer ourboard and started out trying to find our way out again.

Stopped to stretch our legs on another little speck of land and heard something coming from way off and getting closer that sounded like a truck or something. Finally out of the trees came a huge barge just barely out of the water with a man on a tiller on the back and the barge was full of hogs. We flagged him down and learned that he was a Cajun and was collecting hogs that he had out of various islands in the swamp.

The barge was powered by a model A engine. It sat up on a little box and the propeler shaft went down into a trough in the bottom of the boat that was open in the bottom. The propellar was under the barge somewhere in front of the big tiller on the back.

He laughed at us about being lost in the swamp and then let us follow him for a couple of miles to another channel that he said would bring us out where we needed to be. It did! Or we might have been found days later nothing but rags and bones after the mosquitoes got through with us.

Needed a GPS!

Zane I live south of Alexandria.I have hunted and fished in a lot of these "bayous" around here.I too have been bitten by these large mosquitoes, and stranded over night too!!I have been helped out by a lot of these "Cajuns" seems funny to me but they dont mind being called"COONASSES" some even like it!! Most all of them are great people and have accepted some of my Texan ways.I still cannot accept some of their "cuisine"

Where south of Alexandria do you live? Anywhere near that big reservoir on the Sabine River?
Toledo Bend I think they call it. That was not there when I was stationed at England AFB in Alexandria back in 1955-58. I was in an air refueling squadron and we worked on KB 29s and KB 50s. Seems like a dream to me now.

Emai me. I won't be back to this page again I don't think.

In one of the ford farm tractor books it mentions Ford and boats in the mid 20's and use for racing boats etc etc It was pretty intresting to say the least

Their was a company called Lasserre That made a marine attachment for fordson engine

In the book it listed some spec's

Wieght 1,400 lbs
Engine and attachment 1,600 lbs
Boxed for export 1,800 lbs
Atachment only 350 lbs Engine speed 1,000 rpm operates on Kersene

Propeller Speed 382 rpm
reverse 366 rpm
propeller 30x30 in hyde blade

My V-6 Mercruiser runs @ 5,000 RPM and puts out 192hp. I think you'd not be happy with a 27hp 2200 RPM engine. I do remember a Ford V-8 flathead in a small boat up on Goodyear lake years ago -- moved right along.....

I've got the same V-6 Mercruiser in my boat. Have you ever run it in salt water, and what are the consequences?

Loren: Have not yet run in salt water as I can't figure out how to tow the 5th wheel and the boat at the same time, but I would not hesitate to use it in salt water as long as you flush it out with fresh water after you pull'er out -- I would not leave it setting at the pier in salt water for extended periods.
