STARTER SWITCH/BUTTON HELP NEEDED

I was cranking my 9N vigorously because it wouldn't start. Finally it stopped cranking and the starter wouldn't make a peep. I replaced the starter switch that is located on the front of the steering housing. The starter still doesn't make a sound. I have 12 volts at the positive battery cable side of the starter switch but I have no voltage on the starter side of the switch or at the starter when I depress the starter button, which is located in front of the gear shifter. Here are my questions: 1. Can the starter switch be installed upside down? I can't find anything that indicates either a top or bottom to the switch. 2. I removed and reinstalled the starter button that is located right in front of the gear shifter. Is there anything special that I need to know about installing the starter button? It seems to slip right in. 3. What's wrong? I would appreciate any advice that anyone can give me. Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem with my 41 9N... it really may not be your starter.. it more than likely is the new switch.. I went through several of the foreign made switches at $23 each... I even tested the connectivity of the switch prior to installing it.... I finally got another switch that fits the prior years ( $8.50), it was a good switch, but I had to hold it in place with a couple of fender washers. It has been a year now an the tractor starts even a 10 below zero.... again it may not be your starter.

Bob,
1. Yes, but nobody would know because it acts the same. In other words, No. 2. The purpose of the push buttom is to move the rod that goes through the steering box and actuate the switch on the font side. If the rod ain"t gettin pushed, the switch ain"t gonna actuate. 3. Either the rod isn"t doing it"s job or the switch isn"t. Remove the switch and see if the rod is positioned to actuate the switch. Then use your meter to see if the switch is opening and closing like it should. Last, connect jumper cables from negative battery post to another ground on the tractor. AFTER MAKING SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NUETRAL, connect the other cable to positive terminal on battery and touch the post on the starter where the cable connects. If starter spins, replace switch. If starter doesn"t spin, take it to a shop to be checked out.
Good luck,
Russ
