hydraulics leak down

My hydraulics leak down very quickly when under load. At full lift with my bush hog on, if I put my foot on the clutch, the hog will be on the ground in less than a minute. Sometimes it is very slow to raise the hog and shakes quite a bit. I am guessing that this is a piston ring failure from looking at the fo-4 and reading the posts here. Here's the problem: I have never delt with this before and I am afraid of really screwing up and costing myself big bucks. Does anyone know of a mechanic that would come out to my farm in Scottsville Virginia? What would something like this cost? Thanks for you help!!---Rob
P.S. The position control lever dosen't want to stay put either. What causes that??

What SouNdguy said.
FWIW...I'd never worked on this kinda stuff b/4. Get the FO-4, search the archives, ask questions to this board. The worst part is the top cover is kinda heavy. 2nd worse was I'd never honed anything b/4. Went to NAPA got their brake cylinder hone. While I didn't get all scratchs, I greatly reduced the number/severity. MY lift holds my 5' hog over night w/only dropping 2".
I would also....
....replace the pressure relief valve while your there.
....use a garden pressure sprayer w/some kero or deisel to clean up the gunk thats accumulated in the bottom of the well.

Good luck....don t. ....

A cork friction disc holds the hytrol lever in place.

Pull your right side inspection cover and look up in the housing with a flashlight.. rais your lift with a good laod on it. Of oil is shooting out the back of the lift piston.. it needs some work.

Don't fear. the gaskets, and piston / oring is less than 100 bucks. And that includes a new relief valve. if you do just the basics.. you will only need a round cover side gasket.. a top cover gasket. The 3 small gaskets under the lift cyl.. a new piston, an oring and backup washer.

That's it. Also.. if the hyd cyl isn't deeply scored and completely hosed.. use a brake cyl hone and lightly hone it up and down ( cross hatch pattern works ). Install the oring and backup washer ( backup washer goes closest to 'open' end of piston.. oring goes closest to 'closed' end of piston.. use some cooking oil or tranny oil to help seat the oring... also drop the leather backup washer in a pot of boiled water, and turn off the heat. let it se at least 15 minutes. The leather washer has a smooth side and a rough side. Smooth side towards the metal.. rough side will have the oring setting on it. Ther eis also a neophrene backup washer available from NH.. it has a smooth side and a beveled side. beveled side toward oring.

Clean up the cyl and install the piston. Again.. use some tranny fluid to lube it.

In the begining.. if you cant get the piston out.. a bit of compressed air will shoot it into your hand.

You will have to unbolt the cyl from the top cover to remove the piston. pull those 4 studs LAST , and only remove the studs from the outter section of the top cover.

I think everything is 11/16

You'll have to remove the upper lift arm pins holding the lift links, and probably the rocker ( good luck ).

This isn't a bad job. i did my 8n top cover, and pump and all in 9 hours spread out over a 3 day weekend. If yours is just a top cover.. it should be 4 hours in and out and about 40$ in parts assuming you have a brake hone, and the cyl isn't hosed. if the cyl is bad.. add another 95$

The FO-4 has a great section on this. Borrow a torque wrench.. etc.

Like I said. the top is easier than the bottom.

If you can lift about 50-6-# you should be good to go.

When you reinstall.. have some help with you if this is an 8n as you will need help guiding the some parts together from the top cover to the pump valving. I did it with my foot, and some long screwdrivers while holding my mouth just right.

Rob, if you are some what knowledgeable in basic repair work this is an easy job, it will help to have a second set of hands, the job is basically the same for the n series tractors, but post back with what model you have and we can give you instructions. When you talk about the position control lever are you refering to a small lever right next to the seat, or the large lever you use to raise and lower the lift (touch control lever)?
