If I unhook my battery cable while my 9n is running and it dies does that mean my generator isnt charging or working

Yep, that is what it means, but don't despair, if you are lucky, nothing is really bad. Have you recently jumped it off or connected a battery charger up to it?

That is actually a good thing. Chances are, nothing is really broke. The most likely cause is that you accidentally reversed polarity during the battery swap or the jump off. I assume we are working with an orriginal 6V positive ground? Battery positive is connected to body? All you have to do is repolorize your voltage regulator. With the engine OFF, take a jumper wire and arc between the Field lead and the battery lead of your voltage regulator. In most cases that would be the yellow lead and the white lead of the voltage regulator. Then start her up and disconnect your battery lead again to see if that fixed it. I will leave my email open in case you need more detailed instruction, post and let me know to check email.

bboy..... ..Jimmy is kinda right, except he is describing the proceedure for a 3-wire genny and 4-wire squarecan voltage regulator which the 9N doesn't have 'cuz yer 9N has a 1-wire 3rd brush genny and roundcan cutt-outt relay.

Ya really need to "re-polarize" yer 2-terminal roundcan cutt-outt relay underneath yer battery tray on yer steering column. I use a pair of pliers handles to "arc-spark" the opposing terminals. Engine OFF. You can re-polarize ennytime you think you might be having charging problems; correctly done, won't hurt nuttin and probably fixx yer problem..... ...respectfully, Dell

Jimmy.. A-circuit 8n gennies polerize by jumpering bat and armature.. not bat and field.. that's a good way to cook an a-circuit VR.

A B-circuit ( NAA and up ) genny can be polerized by jumpering bat and field.

As a quick reference.. on Acircuit.. the genny provides a ground reference for the gennies internally hot field.

In a bcircuit setup.. the regulator provides field power to the gennies grounded field shoes.

3rd brush 9n/2n gennies were kinds sorta bcircuit.. thier field power came from the adjustable 3rd brush..

Sorry that I couldn't catch up to ya, LAST week-end.

Had to do some quick photo re-con work there at the NORMANDY rehearse area. Kim pretty well shut me down fer a while until I could find a "GOODWILL" store computer system, AGAIN.

Love, John,PA
