probably wont effect anything except your wallet if its a very big leak and ya know that small leaks turn into big leaks,, but its an easy fix and about $4.00 for the pair,, it beats leaving an oil trail everywhere you go

Thanks. Just hate touching those manifold studs since the crazy things go into the water jacket.

Now Tom, that"s no way to look at it. If the studs stay where they"re supposed to, all well and good. If they come out, either they were under torqued or the nuts are frozen and/or improper, which would be something you"d want to fix anyway. Right?

O.K. Thanks for pointing out the bright side.O.K. I"ll "Get er done"....While I have it off should I drill and tap the manifold for a vacuum hookup? New manifolds never have the hole....

drilling and tapping for a vac. gauge would be a great idea,, i used a 1/4"npt the last time i did one, and thats what i'm gonna use tomorrow...
the hardware store carries a tube of thread seal with teflon in it and comes out looking like a creme colored toothpaste(under a buck)cheap insurance for no more leaks,, be sure to put brass nuts back on at 27lbs. of torque

Hooker, I borrowed a 1/4 NPT tap today from work and it is way bigger than the hole in my old manifold..I btought another tap home and it is 1/8 NPS(fine thread)and it will screw into the threaded hole in the old manifold...I just want to be sure I thread it right for proper connection of the vacuum gauge..Any other advice?
Thanks

Leave the manifold on there. in reply to Tom in MS, 03-20-2005 14:20:00
You"ll probably want to remove the governor but the manifold can stay.

OK Thanks--looks like a tight place to work but if you can do it this way, I sure had rather not touch the manifold..

I've done it both ways. in reply to Tom in MS, 03-21-2005 04:27:09
I"d much rather leave the manifold in place just so the devil does"t jump up and I don"t have to fuss with those gaskets. I might remove the carb but I can"t remember. I think I do; it"s easy to pull off.

It"s no big deal to change the cover gaskets with the manifold in place. The arms on the governor do get in the way so I move that.

Easy does it tightening both the cover studs and the governor bolts. I use a torque wrench on the covers (8-10ft.lbs) and governor (6-10ft.lbs) and just a little silicone gasket goop on the governor gasket (1/16" bead down the centerline).
