I have a 51 8N with side mount distrib, tractor starts but when throttle is applied motor dies, also governor squeels until I unscrew proofmeter cable. Any ideas, my initial guess is governor needs to be rebuilt but I don"t really know.
Thanks

Mustanger..... ....while yer lack of throttle response could be carbuartor ...or... governor; the FIRST thing I'd check is yer 5-nipple sidemount distributor FIRING ORDER. Its 1,2,4,3 CCW. These N-Engines are so good that they'll start and run on just 2-cylinders but won't have enny guttz. Usually its sparkies 4&3 gitts swapped.

Then I'd check yer sparkies with a "calibrated" sparkie tester made outta enny ol'sparkie with the side electrode bent-out to a full 3/16" gap. Clamp the testsparkie metal shell to enny handy engine bracket/bolt and then plug enny sparkie wire to the top of yer tester. Now try and start yer tractor and watch yer tester for sparkies. Do the sparkies jump the gap with blue-snot authority or whimper with a yellowish/orangish excuse of a sparkie? Do you need to be told what to do?

Then iff'n that don't solve yer problem, do a governor check. Standing on the ground with engine runnin' about 1/4-1/3 throttle, grabb yer carb-governor throttle rod by hand and "JAZZ" yer engine for more RPM's. Does it fight you? governors probably good. No fight, governors probably yer problem.

Governors ain't rocket science (altho rocket engine pumps have governors) Read yer I&T FO-4 manual. Parts $50; new governor $250; yer call.

Last thing to check is yer carb. Much to the dismay of govermental EPA bureaucrats; carbs haffta be individually adjusted to the engine it is mounted on. And theres yer N-Carb with them-thar handy-dandy adjusters right out in the open, just beggin' for some lovin' attention from hamm-handed shadetree mechanics.

Yer Marvel/Schebler TSX carb is somewhat unique because unlike automobile carbs, yer M/S has an adjustable mainjet. Both Ford and M/S say to set BOTH the downpointing mainjet and the sidepointing idlemixture to 1-turns to start with. I set my DOWNpointing MAINJET to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT!!!

I then adjust the SIDEpointing IDLEMIX for maximum rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, MAX rpms. Understand? I then adjust the behind the carb throttle idle for a SLOOOooow 400rpms. (ennythang under 500rpms is probably good) I do this idle-adjust dance at least 3-times. Remember, yer idlemixture is BASSACKWARDS, out for lean; IN for INRICH. My idlemix usually ends-up about 3/8 turn..... ....HTH, Dell

Either your main fuel adjustment needle is screwed in too tight, or your main jet is partially clogged. That is the most likely cause.

Good luck,
Dan

Lube the cable with graphite powder. in reply to MustangMan, 03-22-2005 14:28:49
Get a tube at Sears, if"n I remember right. The hardware store will likely have a bottle of graphite in liquid but I like the little tube of dry graphite powder because it"s the correct lube for locks too. Anyway, just get a bunch of graphite into the proofmeter end of the cable until it runs quiet and smooth.
You might need to rebuild the carb but try a couple things. The small adjustment screw on top and out the side of the carb, back it out 1/8-turn see if that helps. Probably won"t. Then turn the big adjustment screw out the top in 1/4-turn and see if that fixes it. You can turn that big screw in more but keep track of the 1/4-turns so you can put it back if nothing changes. Nothing changes, you can get a kit to rebuild the carb at lots of places like a New Holland dealer (I think) and a farm/ranch store like TSC. Look for the part number on the carb (eg; TSX-241) so you can get the right kit.
If you do rebuild the carb spend time and effort being real picky making absolutely sure you find and clear all passages and orifices. Flashlight helps. Welder"s tip cleaners helps. An FO-4 manual helps. But it"s far from rocket science.
