coastie,
If"n yer sayin "A good manual" as in ONE manual, then the I&T FO-4 Shop Service Manual should be it. But, everybody"s right. Without the care and feeding details in the Operator"s Manual, yer gonna be usin the fixin manual more than ya should. Sumpin nobody else mentioned is the Master Parts Catalog. That"s my most dogeared, grease stained book I got. And real handy when some jerk on ebay is tryin to sell steerin parts fer 9N, 2N AND 8N.

No, I don't work for these guys, but i did buy from them. CD comes with Operators', service, parts manuals for 9N/2N, 8N, Plow Book and a few other pretty interesting books. I use them more than my FO-4. And, you can just print out the page(s) you need at the time so you don't get your $30 cheap FO-4 all covered in grease/oil/grunge.

Stickler,
I checked out that link. Do I have this right: you get all 15 of the manuals pictured there on the one CD for $34 (plus shipping charge)? Is the FO-4 IT manual included? I can see the Master Parts manual is, and that would be worth the bucks by itself probably. Thinking of buying that CD if it includes the FO-4 IT manual. Since you have it, I figured you'd know for sure. Thanks,
Carl S

No, the FO-4 doesn't come on the CD, but the 8N service manual that does come on it makes the FO-4 just an extra nicety to have around. I think it's a great deal! I have two FO-4's, one from 1958 and one brand new, and I rarely open them anymore. And you're right, the master parts manual alone is well worth the price.

Most folks get plenty for the 8N Operator's manual in reply to coastie, 03-23-2005 05:53:34
I got mine at the New Holland dealer for $5.

If you want to do your own repairs the FO-4 is great but a fair amount of the FO-4 comes right out of the Operator"s manual.

Thing about the Operator"s manual from New Holland is that it"s the latest model and not the earlier model with the front-mount distributor. It"s still worth $5 for the safety instructions and the stuff Dan mentioned. Plowing instructions and stuff like that.

While the I&T F-04 manual is and excellent technical manual for your 8N tractor, you would be surprised at how much technical info is in the 8N Operators Manual as well. Many times I have had to switch back and forth between the two books to solve a problem, and the Operators Manual also gives good general care info and scheduled maintenance as well. I HIGHLY recommend you get both books, they are fairly inexpensive and can be found for less than $20 each. I got a very good used Operators Manual for $5 off eBay.

Now, the NAA Operators Manual and I&T Manual are just about worthless IMO.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan - What do you recommend for references for the NAA?

The archives on this site! The operators manual is useless, and the VERY thin I&T manual is very cryptic on proceedures and is not anywhere as detailed as the 8N I&T manual is. The Ford NAA Service Manual isn't much better. I have had to use both the NAA I&T and the NAA Service Manual AND this site to perform quite a few proceedures. If there is a more thourough manual out there, I have not found it yet. It is almost as if Ford discovered they were giving too much info out on the 9N/2N/8N series, and decided they needed more dealership service work or something...

Sorry I could not be more helpfull,
Dan

I'd suggest the I&T FO4 manual; available on this site.
