It"s just warm enough according to the can. Maybe the surface isn"t warm enough.
It"s that cheap, EasyWay primer they sell at TSC. I haven"t used it in this cooler weather but it"s always worked ok for me but today it wrinkles in spots. The can says an overcoat might wrinkle but this is the prime coat and it wrinkles right now.
What"s up with that?

Also some lacquer based primers and paints will lift over enamel paints. That is why most paint shops put on a sealer coat to prevent bottom coat from reacting with top coat. Not a problem with the newer basecoat/clearcoat paints but the old thinner based enamels and lacquers were a headache.

I suppose this fast-dry primer is a lacquer but it doesn"t say. It"s wrinkling over bare metal. I can"t believe the metal isn"t clean enough but that"s always a possibility. I removed the wrinkles, cleaned again, and it wrinkled again. This primer has worked well for me on several of these small projects. The humidity is high and temp low. I wait till the air temp is high enough but the humidity might be too high.
I"ve heard you can"t put a "fast" coating over a "slow." Maybe I should wipe this metal down with acetone or lacquer thinner before I shoot it. I"ve been using the "slow" paint thinner to wipe it down. I don"t know, it"s spotty so the paint thinner wipe probably isn"t the problem.

Rob. one of two things. Either the metal has an oily film on it (what did you clean it with?) some cleaners like some paint thinners are more like kerosene and will leave a coating. BUT...The cause I'm usually guilty of is, if its a rattle can, is not shaking them up enough. HTH...Tim

I am getting to be an expert at rattle can painting :) Paint wrinkles up because the surface it is being sprayed onto is not solid, so as the top coat dries it "pulls" the unstable bottom coat with it - causing wrinkles. All I can assume is the surface you sprayed the primer onto was not squeaky clean, or you sprayed another layer of primer over primer that was not FULLY dry. Unfortunately, the only way to get these wrinkles off is to scrap/sand/wire wheel the paint back off and start over. At least you are just on the primer stage, I had to do this with my pulley when I was putting the second coat of enamel on it, I taught myself a few new words that night...

Good luck,
Dan
