Small engine/magneto anyone?

I got a Wisconsin TJD; Spec. 331024, SN 514064 with a real, real weak spark and won"t start or even try to fire even on starter fluid in the air cleaner.

It"s got Autolite 386 plugs and a Fairbanks-Morse magneto; CW Type 15, FM X3B7F, SN 6296, Made for Y-79-B. The wire off the points to the stud has melted insulation and corrosion so I"ll replace that. It could use plug wires but I"ll see if it runs without them. I don"t know the plugs are right for the engine. It did run when I parked it a year or two ago.

Anyone know the plug and points gap? Thanks.

MOST F/M magnetos run a point gap of .020".

The spark plug gap is likely .025".

Be sure to use copper wire core spark plug wire.

Clean the points, verify that the stud through the case is not shorted or "leaky", bleeding off primary spark energy, if that doesn't help, suspect the condensor and as a last resort, the coil.

(Also check the cap for cracks or signs of damage.)

Hey Bob, those plugs and points were all gapped less then those specs you gave me. I got them set now though. The plug wires are probably ok too. They don"t show any surface cracks so I"ll leave them for now anyway. I think I know the problem.
The rotor wobbled and put some serious wear on the contacts in the cover. It took off at least 1/16" of material off those contact posts. The posts are all scored up now. The springy clip that tensions the rotor on the shaft was broken right at the 90* bend. I got the rotor snug on the shaft when I slipped some brass shim stock around the shaft and positioned the springy clip parts. I suspect the rotor will be ok. I do wonder about the cover though.
Is there a fix for those tore-up contact posts short of replacing the cover? I don"t put many hours on that trencher so a shade-tree fix is good for me; especially considering a new cover might cost $75+.

Hey! Glad to hear from you. I"ve been winging it and getting nowhere. Thanks very much for the gap info and tips.

I just found some fresh copper core wire so I"ll be able to replace the plug wires here in a minute.
