Just heard CNH has gone back to the original style because of all the problems with the newer clutch style.
If true, seems the posidrive clutch style isn"t such a good deal after all.

I didn't have much luck with the new style. One broke the sprocket (that's not the right name)that engages the flywheel and the 2nd eventually failed to retract disintegrating and jamming up starter. I went back to the old style. My 2¢. Steve

I"ve seen a lot of automotive starters with the new style. I"m not sure what the problem is with the N"s starter if it"s not the pin location.
Seems there are three pin locations depending on the bendix. I think there"s two makes of the new style each requiring a unique pin location. Those locations are each different from the old style. Confusing at the least. Sounds like you had a new pin location and stuck the other make new style in there leading to the situation where it never disengages and then flys apart in a couple hours run-time.
Seems a consensus on this board to change to the new style when the old style fails. Might be more to it than just the pin location and that consensus is not well-founded.
I tend to go with the original in like situations anyway, especially if it lasted decades as it was.
